A New School in Fouji – Haiti

Donation protected
Years ago I was fortunate enough to be able to travel with friends to Haiti and make art with many children all over the island. It was an amazing experience and over successive trips, I met some incredible people that were working against odds you and I could only dream of. One particular friend I made, Winter, heads up an organization called Rajepre.

Rajepre has successfully run a school from 2006 which has allowed students to graduate from elementary and secondary level (up to 12 years old). The school is already accredited by the Haitian Education Ministry.

Rajepre has just acquired a piece of land in Fourgy, 1km away from Cité Soleil and from the elementary and secondary community school. There is currently a small wooden shack that Rajepre is using to provide education for 70 children on the land. However, the current building is not safe is and is too small to host Rajepre’s vision for a third level school.

Rajepre’s plan is to construct a 12 classroom building, the first floor made of reinforced concrete and blocks and the second floor made of wood. Both floor will have 6 classrooms and will accommodate over 240 students. The building has already been designed by a local engineer and follows international building code. The labor needed for the construction will be employed locally (Fouji and Cité Soleil) bringing some financial means to the local family who will then send their children to school.

The new school will welcome students from the local area of Fouji who were traveling long distance to go to school. They will be paying the regular fee to attend school (as practiced in Haiti) while saving money and time on transport. Those fees will allow the school to become financially sustainable while keeping providing free admission to vulnerable children from Cité Soleil who graduated from secondary level.

Cité Soleil is the most economically and socially challenged urban area in Haiti; youth with no opportunities often turn to violence and join gangs. Access to education is the best chance for the most vulnerable children in Haiti to come out of the poverty cycle. The children that went through elementary and secondary level with Rajepre community school will have the opportunity to access further education with free scholarship and access to vocational school.

Donating to this project will allow to increase Rajepre’s capacity to support local communities in Cité Soleil. Strengthening something that is already working has been proven to be the best leverage for positive change!
