A New Heart for Josh Smith

Donation protected
2018 has been a rollercoaster! At the end of April, having been married for 7 months, Josh and I found out we were expecting our first child together. We were overjoyed; but what should have been a very happy time planning our new lives as parents, quickly became dampened when Josh started becoming ill at the end of May.

Josh received a diagnosis of cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure in June. Our lives suddenly revolved only around hospital stays, doctor appointments, and prescriptions. Josh became unable to work due to his frequent hospitalizations. In July, after many different therapies and changes in his medications, the physicians told us that Josh would need advanced therapy and a heart transplant.

While this rocked our world, our families gathered around us as we saw the need to move from Maryland to Indiana. Indiana provides us a better support system from my parents, who can not only help Josh get to appointments when I can’t, but they can also help with the baby when he arrives in January. Within a week, our first Little home together was packed up and we flew to Indy.

Josh was immediately hospitalized and has been in St. Vincent’s Cardiovascular Transplant ICU since July 30. The plan is to get an LVAD surgery (heart pump) this week. This will hopefully keep him going for a while, but the end goal is a new heart.

As one can imagine, the hospital bills have been outrageous, with only more to come. Josh has not been able to work. And I will not start my new job until August 27. With a baby due in January, we only have more expenses running toward us. We feel embarrassed to ask, but we need help financially. If you could help us reach our monetary goal, it would mean the world to us. But if you are unable, prayers and good thoughts are just as appreciated.

Thank you all so much for your time. We will keep you updated with Josh’s status as much as we can. Love you all!
