A Living for Lois

We are asking YOU to help us ensure that Lois Merritt is able to live and provide for herself while she battles a terminal breast cancer diagnosis.

In May of 2017, Lois was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer and elected treatment and surgery.  Post mastectomy, just as we were preparing for her return to work and the end of her ei sickness benefits, we learned that the cancer had spread to her lymph system and sadly, her brain.  At that time, Lois no longer had any income.

Although she has since been able to secure CPP disability, it is less than $800/month for her to live on.  This includes expensive medication not covered, travel costs, healthy living and eating and of course, items needed for her to remain comfortable at home.

In typical Lois fashion, she is fighting the government to make change for others; that EI sick benefits are extended and increased for those facing a terminal illness; she does this knowing that she herself will not benefit from it.

Lois has tirelessly worked as a community outreach worker in Saint John since 2002, assisting women and families who are homeless and facing homelessness, ensuring they have affordable housing, household items, income, food, medical, mental health and addiction, family and criminal supports, referrals to various community programs and services attending appointments and advocating on behalf of clients.

Now, it's our turn as part of the community to give back to her that same passion and support.
