A Legacy for Sefrou

Shining a light on Sefrou’s legacy.

Culture Vultures is a grass-roots arts organisation in the heart of the market town of Sefrou in the Middle Atlas Mountains of Northern Morocco.  Established in 2009 as an artist residency, over 100 artists have resided here, dozens of study-abroad groups have engaged with the community and hundreds of culturally-curious visitors have been led into the artisans workshops to discover the people and stories behind Moroccan crafts.  Today Culture Vultures  encompasses community-arts, cross-cultural dialogue and social engagement for local and visiting artisans and art and culture lovers. Our pledge is to bring together a creative community in and around Sefrou with art at its core.

Over its 3000 year existence as a settlement, Sefrou has hosted a rich array of residents, from its native Amazight people to the Romans, Jews (both Sephardic and Ashkenazi ) and even the revered Moulay Idriss  II, the founder of Islamic Morocco.  In the 20th century Sefrou was nicknamed The Garden of Morocco for its abundance of orchards and springs and Little Jerusalem as up until the mid 1900s it was home to a large Jewish population. It is no surprise then that UNESCO recognizes both Sefrou’s old city and its century old Cherry festival as of world heritage importance.

Sefrou is a precious gem that we at Culture Vultures want to showcase and share with the world so that the history, stories, traditional arts and rich personality that make up this hospitable and yet unassuming Moroccan town can be discovered and celebrated.

Through this crowdfunding project, we now offer you the chance to be part of the community that honors this rich Sefrouian heritage.  Here’s how we propose to do so.

Phase i – Target of 700 euros for an editor’s stipend.  Six exquisitely filmed interviews have been shot by Sam Lardner   and Ezra Leese   and edited by Australian film maker Helen Newman of Nomad Films , thanks to the funds raised by our community.  Chokrane.   The vingnettes  include a village Sheikh, the president of the local Jewish association, locals' tales and academic theories that will contribute to the Museums content and storyline.

Phase ii -  Construction of the structure and design of the content is where we are at now, long with the backstage longer-term,project planning and community building.  We are currently raising funds to acquire the technology and build the walls, draws, contraptions that aims at being a interactive and engaging presentation for all ages, backgrounds and languages to be captivated by.  A content writer and translators are being searched for so that, along with video footage and sound files,  Multiculturalism in Sefrou may be further unraveled.  The doors are soon to be opened.

If you have spent time in Sefrou's medina and been embraced by its community, then you probably left with part of this small ancient city somewhere in your heart.  Now you have the chance to become a member of its larger supporting troop, contribute to the presentation of the Museum and make an impact on it's development.

Culture Vultures invites you to join forces and shine a light on Sefrouian history, artisan-ship and culture and share it with the world at large.
