Mr. Duffey is a 7th grade social studies teacher at Northwest Middle School in Travelers Rest, SC. The staff and students all adore him, as he is a wonderful father, friend, teacher, and co-worker . He and his family will be traveling to Charleston at the end of September for his daughter to have a kidney transplant.  His daughter, Katie,  is only 2 years old and Mr. Duffey is her donor.  This is amazing news for their family after a lot of health struggles for Katie. She will have her nephrectomy (remove her kidneys) and will then be put on dialysis for two weeks. Unfortunately, this has to be done with the type of kidney disease she has. Then the transplant will occur! MUSC's pediatric transplant division is excellent and we know Katie will be in great hands and very well taken care of!
24003096_15058340270_r.jpegMr. Duffey will be out of school for about 6 weeks for both his and his daughters recoveries.  He does not have enough sick days to cover this and we are no longer able to donate our own sick days to coworkers. I am a co-worker of Mr. Duffey's at Northwest Middle, and so many staff had been talking and wondering what they could do to help, and the best thing seemed to start a GoFundMe to help support this wonderful family. The funds raised here will go directly to the Duffey family for medical expenses for all of the upcoming procedures, living expenses while they are in Charleston for at least 6 weeks, and any after care that arises.

On Friday, both Drew and Katie went in for their surgeries, and both went so well! Drew was just managing his pain, but fine overall. Katie came out of surgery and went into the PICU to be monitored. The kidney was functioning! Later that night, they were both still fine, just in pain.

Earlier today, Drew's pain was more controlled and he was being released later in the day. Katie is responding so well that they will get out of PICU today and will be on a regular floor. Even better, they think she will get out in a few days, rather than the original two weeks! The family will need to stay in Charleston for about a week or so, but then they can head back to Greenville as long as things continue to go well!

I have been getting questions about what has been going on, and I'm so sorry I haven't posted updates recently....here is what has been going on since the family got to Charleston:

Soon after the family got there, Katie had to get a blood transfusion as they could not keep her blood count up. Due to this, the transplant was postponed temporarily. They had to wait a few weeks to test her blood to see if she was still a match with Drew (it takes that long for antibodies to show up after a transfusion). There was still a chance Drew would be a match, but the odds were not as good as before. On top of that she had been very nauseous as they were trying to get her nutrition just right.

Katie started doing better and was finally keeping some food down. She was getting all of her food through a feeding tube. The doctors felt that she was not healthy enough for a transplant then and with proper nutrition/dialysis they would get there soon.

A few days ago the family found out that Drew is still a match! AMAZING!!! The transplant is tomorrow at 7:30 am! Positive thoughts and prayers go out to the Duffey family tomorrow!
