A Heart for Ocho

Donación protegida
One normal weekend this February, disaster struck. A great young man, Dylan Charles King, suffered cardiac arrest and almost passed away. But Dylan’s story was not over. He fought back with great tenacity and after several months, had recovered enough to be discharged from the hospital.  But now he needs a new heart.

Dylan was born as a perfect little boy with an imperfect little heart. He was diagnosed with a complex and very serious congenital heart defect days after birth. In short, his heart is on the right side (instead of the left), which jumbles the placement of other organs. He does not have a functioning spleen, and his heart has only a single fully developed ventricle, which is also significantly narrowed, restricting the blood flow out of his heart. Two open heart surgeries and a thoracic surgery before the age of four gave Dylan a new lease -- not just on having a life, but on living a life. And he has taken advantage of that opportunity. He has excelled academically, maintaining an A average in high school with a rigorous schedule. Dylan and his challenged heart have also played baseball from a very young age, excelling at that as well, right through varsity baseball in high school. With a few scares along the way, Dylan had been blessed to live the life of a normal kid.

But now Dylan faces another great fight. He is listed on the National Transplant List as of May of this year, with the second highest juvenile priority due to his condition. Dylan’s heart transplant is obviously a very serious surgery, and while insurance will defray some of the costs, there are aspects of care and recovery which will not be covered at all. For the first year after a transplant, a patient remains at high risk for rejection, and there are many costs associated with monitoring and guarding against this, as well as with recuperation in other ways, which insurance does not cover. After-care is crucial. To get through it, Dylan needs our help. Dylan’s defective heart needs to be replaced by a transplant that will be difficult, painful, and very, very expensive.  There are no other medical alternatives for Dylan. Just a small bit of assistance from a large group of selfless and kind people will give Dylan a fighting chance.  Please know that 100% of all donations will be put into a separate account exclusively for Dylan’s medical expenses.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know a little bit about Dylan. Please help us achieve our goal of letting Dylan and his family focus on the difficult work ahead on the long road to full health, without the incredible burden of out-of-pocket medical costs. It would also be extremely helpful if you are willing to forward a link to this page to anyone that might be interested in helping and also if you are willing to post a link to this page on all of your social media platforms.  Use the hashtag #dylansheart. According to gofundme, a link posted increases the exposure of this worthy cause many times. Dylan is a fantastic young man and he has a fantastic future ahead of him.  With our help, that future is boundless. #dylansheart
