A father’s fight to live

Donation protected
Selbert Butler affectionately known as Sellie/Butler, a relatively young, humble and loving father to eight children and four grandchildren has been battling a silent disease since the age of eighteen; hypertension. Despite this life changing ailment, he has always fancied himself with bringing smiles and sharing love through his artistic works as being a florist, operating from a small homegrown flower shop on Barrack Road. To date, his intention has always been to share his love with each and every person he meets.  It seems however, that life has other plans for Sellie.

On Friday the 21st day of December 2018, a day which otherwise would have been filled with celebration (a new baby was born) was instead filled with much worry and fear. Selbert's life was being turned upside down as he had to be admitted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for complications related to his hypertension.  Now, Selbert is no stranger to hospital visits, but something was different about this time and he would soon learn how different it was.

Despite spending three agonizing days in the hospital and undergoing CT Scans and various tests, doctors were unable to regulate his blood pressure. He continued to experience  excruciating headaches and an indescribable 'bad feeling'.  He knew something had to be terribly wrong. Feeling helpless, on Sunday, December 23rd 2018, he then opted to take the risk and discharge himself from the hospital and thereafter admit himself at the Belize Medical Associates.

Here he spent four agonizing days, once again, with doctors being unable to regulate and stabilize his blood pressure. He was treated with several different hypertension medications, which to his dismay, only exacerbated the headaches. After running a series of tests, doctors informed him that much to his surprise that what they observed was bleeding from his brain. He was informed that he needed immediate medical attention, attention which Belize is unable to provide. As such, thanks to the help of Dr. Cuellar, arrangements were immediately made on Thursday 27th December 2018 and on the 28th of December 2019, Selbert was transported to Star Medico Hospital in Merida, Yucatan to undergo a series of tests to determine firstly what was the cause of the elevated pressure nobody seemed to be able to regulate and secondly, to treat said blood pressure.

Upon arrival via ambulance to Star Medico, doctors quickly began running a series of tests in following up with the findings from Belize. At around 3p.m. Belize time, Selbert was given the news no person would want to hear, that he was standing at death's door. Selbert was informed that in addition to the bleeding in his brain, he had a series of tumors attached to the adrenal gland and that the same was the cause of the elevated blood pressure. He was additionally informed that he had suffered a minor stroke which was the cause of the bleeding in his brain and it was imperative that the tumors be removed as soon as possible.  Failure to remove will result in a continued elevated pressure and the ultimate result, death.

Surgery:

Removal of tumors attached to the adrenal gland warrants a very technical and highly invasive procedure called an adrenal laparoscopic excision. The cost of said surgery has been quoted as being $18,000.00 USD. A cost that is not within Selbert's immediate reach.

Selbert plays a very important role in not only his family, but his extended community. As one would imagine that having have to undergo a series of tests, three different times, three different labs, three different institutions and in two different countries would be extremely costly. Selbert, a man of humble means, has had to deplete his entire savings in trying to find out what is wrong. Now that he knows, he's unable to treat his problem, which is why we have sought to humbly ask for your kind assistance as it relates to covering the sum quoted for the surgery. We understand that having just celebrated Christmas, budgets are tight, but we implore that any donation will be greatly appreciated. It is our earnest intention to keep Selbert alive so that he may continue to share his love and craft with the world.

For those who find it within their hearts to contribute, we thank you. It is unimaginable the depth of gratitude we have for the selfless act of sharing with us in these dire times. For those who wish they could assist but are unable to, we thank you as well, and we ask that you hold Selbert in your heart and prayers, so that with God's grace he will be healed.
