A Convergence: Women in Design

A Convergence at the Confluence of Power, Identity, and Design

This convergence marks the formation of a regional network of equity-focused design school student groups. We have a chance to grow and merge the many individual conversations happening in our departments and in our schools. The Shitty Architecture Men list did not tell us anything we did not already know; however, it did spark broad conversation in places where there had been uneasy silence. We must not return to that silence. We must interrogate aspects of architecture and design that have been traditionally defined by and built for a white patriarchal world. We must engage in a collective restructuring of the design disciplines and actively question the nature of design work and how gender and our other identities intersect in that work.

What we imagine happening:

Conversing together. Friday we will kick things off with a speaker followed by a mixer that coincides with the school's weekly "Beer and Dogs" happy hour. Saturday will be a mix of roundtable panels, workshops, a Pecha Kucha of various school groups' projects, and another speaker. The broad topic for each session revolves around one of these crucial elements of design: Identity, Activism, Power, Labor, Pedagogy, and Emotion. Within each broad topic, we will have a series of provocations for panelists and attendees to talk through.

Making together. In parallel to all this talking, we will have a room in another building where each participant will write or draw or somehow put their thoughts on a small piece of fabric, and add the piece onto a pre-built framework -- so that by the end of Saturday we will have collectively created a physical installation. The installation will grow as it travels to other schools and institutions and as more people add pieces on.

Why we need your support:

Installation. We anticipate that the collective making of this installation will cost around $6000, which would include supplies and materials for its realization. We are working with Katarzyna Balug and Maria Lucia Vidart at the Department of Play in order to construct this installation.

Honoraria. For speakers who may be coming from afar, we would like to offer an honorarium for their time and expenses.

Food. We plan on offering lunch and refreshments for our symposium attendees.

Marketing. We want this event to reach as many ears and eyes as possible.
