In Memory of Darrin Shep: A Campaign for the Arts

Tax deductible
On June 11, 2019, at the young age of 29, Darrin Ivan Shep passed away in his home in the mother's arms. As a child, Darrin was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. DMD is caused by an absence of dystrophin, a protein that helps keep muscle cells intact. Symptom onset is in early childhood, usually between ages 3 and 5. Muscle weakness can begin as early as age 3, first affecting the muscles of the hips, pelvic area, thighs and shoulders, and later the skeletal (voluntary) muscles in the arms, legs and trunk. The calves often are enlarged. By the early teens, the heart and respiratory muscles also are affected. Despite these challenges, Darrin lived every day with a smile, a positive attitude, and witty sense of humour. His Facebook profile caption sums up his outlook on life perfectly: "Never give up, no matter how hard life is it is just another chapter."

Darrin was my best friend, my brother I never had, and best man at my wedding in October of last year. He took pleasure in many hobbies including reading, video games, food and travel, nature, theatre, and playing the piano. Darrin had to wait 4 years to write his Grade 4 piano exam, twice delayed due to medical issues. Always the optimist, Darrin prospered but sadly never got the chance to pursue further education due to his passing.

In his memory, this campaign will donate funds to the Royal Conservatory of Music where Darrin took lessons. The Royal Conservatory of Music is a non-profit music education institution and performance venue located in Toronto. In recognition of its contribution to music, it was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1995.

On behalf of my wife, myself, and Darrin's family, we thank you for your donations.
