A Better Home For Ben

Ben is a typical 13 year old. He loves video games, The Avengers and Lego.  He was born on March 28th, 2005. In 2009 he was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Over the last few years, Ben has experienced increasing muscle degeneration and weakness typically associated with this genetic disorder.

Ben is cared for by his single mom, Angela.  Angela works two jobs to provide for Ben and her two other children. During the day, Angela works in a school as an Educational Assistance. While this is a fulfilling job, Angela also works at a Group Home on some evenings and weekends to make ends meet.

In the fall of 2018, Angela broke her hip. She was off work for a few months and has only recently returned to a modified work day. She sees her surgeon regularly and is still unable to lift more than 15 pounds at this time.

Angela has been smiling through the pain and financial strain that this has put on her as a single Mom. This is who Ang is!  To know her is to love her. She radiates positivity and kindness as she touches lives of everyone she meets. Her selfless nature is what makes her a great human being.

Last week, Ben fell out of his wheelchair at school and broke both his right femur and his arm. He required surgery to put pins in his leg to repair the break while his arm is in a sling. Ben has been at McMaster Hospital since his accident. McMaster is a wonderful hospital, however it is 45 minutes away from his home. Although he is medically able to be discharged, Ben can only go home when the necessary modifications have been made to make it a safe and healing environment. His needs are more crucial than ever as he is completely immobile now. Due to the Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy, he will more than likely be permanently in a wheelchair.

Ang has been off work caring for Ben in the hospital. Due to the previous injury to her hip, she is out of sick days. Any time she takes off with Ben is now unpaid.

Ang has only ever wanted what every mom wants for their children: for Ben to be happy and as independent as possible. We need your help to make this happen.

What is required:

a lift in their home
a hospital bed
a more permanent ramp
an electric wheelchair
24/7 care

This is a family who is so deserving of our community’s help and we can't thank you enough!
