My name is Meghan Buchanan and I teach at Eastside Memorial HS in Austin, Texas. This is my 8th year at Eastside and this school is like a second home to me. I have the best job in the world and get to work with incredibly talented, inquisitive, compassionate, and honest students. I am sure I learn more from my students than they learn from me!
At the beginning of this school year my class was discussing the current political climate and some of the recent police incidents and students were expressing a need for there to be safe spaces on campus for dialogue and discussion about racism and equity. Students began organizing and we worked together to plan a workshop with People's Institute for Survival and Beyond as a starting point.
One huge part of this project is reflection and dialogue and we have partnered with the Dub Academy to hold workshops on Song Writing, Hip-Hop, Spoken word, and music production. Students are journaling and writing about their experiences and using their art to create dialogue around educational equity and what they learn in the upcoming training. We were able to secure a little over $3000.00 to fund this portion of the project.
We only have one thing missing fromcontinueing our work and that is the funding for the People's Insitute Undoing Racism Training. We have future training set an funding secured but we still owe for the initial workshop. Our work cannot continue until we cover our debts.
The project doesn't stop with this workshop - our goal is to grow this into a course in student equity leadership and teach these students facilitation skills so that they can lead workshops and professional development on campus and in our distrcit. But it has to start here and we need your help to make it possible!
