Save Pepe!

Mr. Rogers' mother wisely told him once that in times  of crises we should "look for the helpers" so that we know there are still good people here.  Our friend Yamil? He is a helper.  He looks out for the people in his life.  He's usually the first to offer a hand, a ride, a place to crash or hide and lick your wounds if you need it.  He will cover a shift, move in to your house and watch your pets and love them like only you would.  He's a beach buddy and a keeper of secrets.  He is a comedian on the dark days and a go-getter when things need to get done.  He never says no...even if he should.   He's the kind of guy everyone wants to be friends with.  He has never met a stranger, loves with his whole heart, and brings light and laughter to even the dreariest moments.  

The helper needs our help.  His beloved sato, Pepe, the lovable, funny looking, former mayor of the Malecon (and frequent beach escort to the lovely Nena) escaped early Tuesday morning and was hit by a car.  He survived but just barely.  Suffering dislocated hips, a broken femur and a de-gloved leg and paw, Pepe is in bad shape.  Dr. Watlington at VHS took care of the imminent dangers and got him some much needed pain meds and antibiotics but as we all know, Pepe would need a main island trip to address the serious injuries he had.  Away they went to Dr. Delgado in Fajardo for X-rays and assessment.  Yamil was told the next 48 hours would be a wait and see game.   Pepe would have to regain some nerve activity in his legs if he was to make it.  

In true Sato fashion, Pepe has risen to the challenge and has rallied for his life.  He is regaining function in his little legs! Now the reall battle begins.  For Pepe to have any quality of life, he is facing a costly $2000 plus orthopedic surgery.   

 
Pepe is a 5 year old Vieques Sato.  He has a wonderful disposition, very expressive eyebrows and tiny little weenie dog legs underneath the body of a full grown black lab.  He's a get along guy.  A reformed escape artist, he was dubbed Mayor of the Malecon as he was frequently seen taking himself down the street for a quick bite at Duffys or to the Cayo for a swim.  When he isnt keeping Yamil company, he is the loyal companion to Yamil's beautiful momma, Lizin.   

 Yamil is heartbroken at the prospect of putting his best friend to death because he can't afford this surgery.  Pepe deserves more than that.  And so does Yamil.  

Please help our helper.  Its the least we can do.
