Dr Catherine Wheatley calls Australia (Tasmania) home, although over the last few years she has spent little time here.
Recently Dr Wheatley fell in love with Ethiopia while on walking trek through the Simeon Mountain National Park (SMNP).
She wanted to help the people of the area and chose a project that would benefit an entire village. The village chosen was Michibiny.
The project had to be worthwhile, sustainable, able to create positive change and was also culturally appropriate.
The decision was water – fresh, clean water.
The villagers of Michibiny helped with a lot of the work and are very proud of the newly installed water pump.
We have recently founded a small Australian-based charitable organisation, located in Tasmania, that aims to provide more villages in the SMNP with clean fresh water.
In Ethiopia, we have formed a small team of local professionals including an interpreter and cultural guide, and have relationships with a water testing laboratory and the Debark Water Board - which has jurisdiction over the geographical area.
It costs around $4,000AUD to complete the works to instal a water well and pump in these remote villages of Ethiopia.
So far we have installed 5 wells thanks to the generosity of so many wonderful people, with your help we will be installing another 4 wells in early 2017.
