BACKGROUND

We assume the phrase, “it takes a village,” to invoke diverse meanings to a multitude of individuals. However, for James Wafula, it meant life: a home, an education, and people who cared for him as an orphan boy in the hilly village of his birth, Kona Kai, located in the Bududa District of Mt Elgon, Uganda.

Through his life, James has made the most of every opportunity, which resulted in him being fortunate enough to acquire an education and a reputable career as a health care technician. With an occupation established, he has one objective in mind, to pay back the village that raised him with a much-needed healthcare clinic. Even considering the notion that he has had multiple opportunities to take advantage of his knowledge and experience, to work in financially stable, and secure jobs in large, and established cities. Nonetheless, maintaining the health and prosperity of those in his native village is of utmost priority.

It seems like a simple thing.

Transportation on Mount Elgon is mainly by walking.   The clinic where James works is in a separate village and for people in his community it can be a grueling six-hour round trip walk. Which, to stress, is longer than a flight from New York City to Las Vegas.

When luck is on their side,  or they are unfortunate enough to endure the onset of a medical emergency, an individual can pay for a taxi, a scooter ride, or an ambulance. Nevertheless, on most days, people begin walking before dawn in order to get in line to the nearest clinic.

THE PLAN

Professor Kelly Austin of Lehigh University (Pennsylvania) and her students interested in the field of global health studies are aiding James in raising money, implementing health-conscious programs, and training the day-to-day staff of the soon-to-be established clinic. The rest of us can help by giving the cost of six-pack, a cup of coffee, or a movie ticket to help James Wafula achieve one of his many dreams for people of Kona Kai and Mt Elgon; a sense of security through the implementation of a vital healthcare clinic.

If we were to obtain $10 from 500 people we can get the clinic built and open on the already-donated land with its existing building.

It is within our power to grant this wish.  Please help.
