Our team, WACO Aerobotics FTC Team #5140 in Troy, OH, is a robotics team affiliated with FIRST. FTC stands for FIRST Tech Challenge. In this robotics division, team members use STEM and the engineering design process to design, build, program, and utilize computer-aided drafting to create a robot that will perform tasks based on a unique challenge each season.
WACO Aerobotics #5140 has been a force promoting STEM education in our community. We have invested 650 total hours just this year into workshops, demos, presentations, volunteering at events, and teaching a year-long STEM class.
Our team also connects to the engineering and manufacturing community through field trips, tours, and having mentors assist with our team. The team has spent 350 hours touring businesses, visiting Edison State robotics department, fundraising, and participating in Manufacturing Day.
WACO team members have benefitted immensely from the opportunities FIRST has given us. We have compiled a more than 500-page engineering notebook that documents our day to day progress, CAD designs, photos, business plan, outreach, and connect experiences. We also learn public speaking by delivering speeches to the judges and fielding questions from them. Our team impressed the Robinson Foundation so much that they donated $1,000,000 to help WACO Air Museum build a new learnning center for next year.
Our team has participated and placed in competitions both locally and at the state level. We have won multiple trophies including the highest award, the INSPIRE AWARD. We placed 5th place overall at the state competition and qualified to go to the North Super Regionals in Cedar Rapids, Iowa March 15-17, 2018.
Unfortunately, despite our successes, we have depleted our funds for this year. Our primary sponsor, WACO Airplane Museum has reached their financial limit on sponsoring us.
