I am pleased to say that I was raised right here in Richfield, MN. I attended the local public schools, proudly graduated from RHS in 2005, and now own a home in this great city.
Throughout my life I have worked with youth in a variety of capacities , and believe I am uniquely qualified to serve on Richfield's School Board.
Over the last five years, I have held positions as a football and basketball coach at Richfield High School, youth basketball referee, Richfield High School security officer, and a Police Officer. In addition to providing mentorship and guidance for local youth, these experiences share one crucial component: giving back to the community. It is only through direct involvement that one can truly get a sense of his or her environment and become champion for its betterment.
During the 2016-2017 school year, I worked as a security officer at Richfield High School. If frustrating at times, it was an enlightening experience, as I saw first-hand the inner workings of our school system. While I observed many positives, there is still a lot of room for improvement.
Prior to this, I worked as a Police Officer in La Crosse, WI. It was here that I had the distinct opportunity of participating in an experimental, community-based policing program, in which I was embedded in neighborhoods and engaged with the local youth on a daily basis.
Through all of this I have learned that we need mentors and role-models who can relate to the kids, get on their level, and inspire them--less patronizing, more genuine connecting. I am running for School Board because I know I can do this better than the current status quo.
I am a big proponent for both our youth and educators. Our world is facing huge challenges, and we need to be preparing young people to address the problems of the day. This starts in the classroom. I view the diversity in our public schools as a strength, and I will promote equality and understanding among Richfield's residents. Strong public schools are one of the critical pillars of a thriving community.
If given the opportunity, I know that I will not only be a great benefit to the School Board, but to the city of Richfield as a whole.
