In 1979, Portage & Main was closed to pedestrians. For 40 years, Winnipeggers have had to navigate unfriendly and unsafe underground tunnels whenever we want to cross our beloved intersection.

Today, Portage & Main needs millions of dollars in repairs with ugly, crumbling barriers and stairs.  If we have to fix it anyway, why wouldn't we want to make it welcoming, safe and accessible? Let's take this opportunity to fix a 1970s era planning mistake and give our most important downtown intersection an economic shot in the arm at the same time.

Winnipeg City Council has given Winnipeggers the opportunity to decide. The city will be holding a plebiscite at the same time as the civic election on October 24, 2018. We have the chance to positively influence what the centre of our city looks like for decades to come. We won’t get another chance like this. It’s our turn to tell the city that we want a connected city, a walkable city, an accessible city and a beautiful city with beautiful streetscapes.

This campaign is to raise money to pay for a public information campaign (culminating with the civic election in October 2018) to argue in favour of reopening Portage & Main to pedestrians. We will direct funds towards a website, digital marketing, traditional advertising, rallies and other activities in support of the Yes side. We will comply with the City of Winnipeg's election financing rules. Consultants on this campaign will be donating their time because we believe strongly that this is the right move for our city.

The intersection is now especially unfriendly and unfair to people with mobility issues as they have to use a hodgepodge of elevators and ramps to cross the street. It also creates unsafe areas at night where people are afraid to venture underground.

Opening the intersection is the chance to give Portage &  Main the beautiful and welcoming streetscape it deserves. Winnipeggers are rediscovering their downtown in the thousands. The Winnipeg Jets' whiteout parties proved that, and you can see it every day of the week in the Exchange and Downtown as pedestrians and cyclists are growing in number every year, all year long.
