Violet's Homeless Project

Donation protected
My name is Alecia Brettschneider, and I have created this GoFundMe page for my youngest 8 year-old daughter, Violet, who loves 3rd grade and reading.

Violet would like your help to purchase care package supplies for the Anchorage homeless.

Violet initially wanted to build mini-homes and distribute tents to keep the homeless warm this winter.  However,  she quickly realized she could only help out one or two individuals going down this avenue.

We contacted Violet's amazing preschool teacher, Missy Conley, from Starbright Learning ABC for guidance.  Ever since we met Missy in 2009, we have known of her tireless and inspirational dedication to help the homeless.  Violet really liked Missy's suggestion to make care packages (often refered to as "Blessing Bags"), and keep them in our car to hand out when Violet see's someone in need.

Last night (Saturday, January 16th), Violet excitedly started a list of what she wanted to include in her Homeless Care Package.  We have since whiddled the items down for both logistical and financial reasons (fishing pole and bait require the purchase and possession of a state fishing license).

Violet scouted the house and pulled together what she could for the care packages.   However, she quickly realized, ooops, we'll need to  buy several items.

Fast forward to today (Sunday, January 17th), Violet and I went to the secret (sshhhhh) Value Village MLK ClubCard holder pre-sale.  Thank goodness we did.  Their red tag items are 75% off, and other items are 50% off.  WOW!  You can get a big bang for your bucks with discounts like this!!

Violet scoured the store taking her time ensuring she used her allocated $25 wisely and efficiently.  Boy, did she ever score!!  She decided on seven red tag items: 2 thermal sets (top and bottoms), 2 pairs of gloves,  2 pair of merino wool socks,  and a pack of 4 warm cozy socks.  These seven brand new items cost (drum roll) a mere $15.73.

Wow!  Whatever else could she get to include in her Care Packages with the remaining $9.27?  As Violet looked around Value Village she realized many additional items that could have been on her list.  Items that should be included in her Care Package.  Violet began to realize the many basic needs we take for granted, and she stated as such (no vacation from school over a holiday weekend!)

Violet made several painful decisions after weighing the neccessity and benefit of each item.  She relucantly put back several items to keep others.

It was a proud and painful parent moment for me, and I ultimately decided to pitch in an additional $9 dollars.  This allowed her to include (with the Red Tag Items) in her care package: brand new rain poncho, foot and hand warmers, 2 hats, 2 very warm blankets/throws, and one brand new backpack.

Violet's total care package spending for fourteen items was (drum roll) $34.18, with a total savings of (double drum roll) $65.68. WOW!

This is where I am hoping Violet can get some help ...   from you ...  through GoFundMe.

The "official" sale at Value Village is Monday, January 18th, and I'd love to surprise her with a gift, in the form of a donation from you.

All money donated will be wisely spent by Violet to purchase items to include in her Care Packages.  As you can see on Violet's "What to give homeless people" list, there are many items listed that she has yet to purchase.  I assure you, that I will scout out every sale, coupon, and discount there is out there to make your generous donation work extra hard for Violet's passionate cause.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!  I will post updates of Violet's progress here at GoFundMe.

From,
Violet's mom
