Universal K9

Operating in San Antonio, TX by professional dog trainer and canine advocate Brad Croft, Universal K9 takes a unique approach to saving shelter dogs. We adopt high-drive, high-energy dogs (usually the most difficult to place in homes as pets) and train them for service with police departments across the United States.

(Operations Director Brad Croft with Loki, a mixed breed shelter dog now working with the police department in Howe, TX)

Our idea is simple: all types of dogs have the potential to serve our communities. Traditionally, only purebreds from a few select breeds like German shepherds, Belgian malinois, and labradors have been used for police work. But there are plenty of mixed breed dogs sitting in shelters, waiting to be euthanized, with the same potential to detect, track, and protect as purebreds.

And here’s the kicker: A purebred from Europe usually costs police departments between $15,000 and $20,000 to purchase and train. Supported by grants and donations from dog lovers everywhere, Universal K9 adopts shelter dogs at high risk of euthanization, trains them, and places them with police departments FOR FREE.

Since 2010, Universal K9 has placed thousands of dogs with police departments, including over 50 pitbull-type dogs.

We now train over 20 to 40 dogs per month for service, and still have a wait list of dozens of police and sheriff departments.

Our underlying philosophy at Universal K9 is that dogs are dogs. Through the success of our program, we hope to break down unfair and inaccurate negative stereotypes about certain breeds like pit bulls. Most people believe these dogs to be naturally aggressive, but as we continue to prove each day, they have great potential as companions and police dogs. Aggression is a product of poor handling, neglect, or abuse by owners, regardless of breed.

We want to change the conversation around pit bulls and other mixed breed shelter dogs by helping them give back to communities, and end Breed Specific Legislation (BSL), which some municipalities use to outlaw certain breeds or place harmful restrictions on them, irrespective of the dogs’ actual behavior.

(Some Breed Specific Legislation requires that pitbulls wear muzzles in public at all times. Some BSL bans the breed from municipalities entirely.)

Why We Need Backers

Our program is working!

But it’s time to step up our game. We have put together plans to expand operations to the East and West coasts, and up our output to 120 dogs every 6 weeks.

Here’s how your donation will help us:

- Ramp up current operations in San Antonio, TX
- Get more dogs out of shelters and serving our communities
- Purchase property for ongoing operations in:
---San Antonio, TX
---Richmond, VA
---Tahoe, NV
- Renovations to property in Richmond and Tahoe to begin coastal operations within one year

But that’s not all! Every dollar you donate to Universal K9 will have a ripple effect across the country, helping us…

- Save thousands of dogs from euthanization
- Protect our communities with capable canines
- Save millions of taxpayer dollars
- END Breed Specific Legislation for good

Thank you for your generosity and support. Let’s change the world!
