Introduction
For the very first time in the United Kingdom we want to create an opportunity for people with Diabetes to come together and participate in Football, as a team. We want this project to create a diabetes friendly environment that encourages fun and learning. This prospective team is a chance to inspire, raise awareness of Diabetes and prove that the condition isn’t a barrier to sport and exercise participation.
The project goes just beyond the creation of this team as we look to make the project sustainable for 2018, whilst growing its potential beyond that. However, the initial creation of this team is pivotal to achieving longevity.
What is it?
DiaEuro ( www.diaeuro.org ) is an annual Futsal championship (FIFA’s official adapted version of 5 a side Football) where only Diabetics can compete that are over the age of 18. The tournament consists of 12 – 16 European nations who compete against each other to be crowned European Champions. This year’s tournament is held in Slovakia from July 22nd-29th 2018. We require 10 players, a team doctor, physiotherapist and coach in order to be able to participate and the Diabetes Times ran a press release on the creation of the project (www.diabetestimes.co.uk/diabetes-football-club-recruiting-players-for-europe-championship/ ).
