UCB VMO Vietnam Medical Mission

Hi hey hello!

My name is Leyna and I am currently a student at UC Berkeley studying public health and nutritional science! This year I've joined Volunteers for Medical Outreach, which is an organization that partners with Aid to Children Without Parents (ACWP) to give access to free healthcare in Hue, Vietnam. Throughout the year, I have worked tirelessly with VMO to fundraise for the communities that we will be seeing. This GoFundMe has been created as another effort to meet our goals so that we can provide the vaccines, mobile clinics, and corrective surgeries during our visit this upcoming May! In other words, none of the proceeds from this GoFundMe will be going towards personal expenses (like airfare etc.) so no worries!

A little more about me:
I joined VMO with the hopes of gaining a better understanding of what healthcare means in a global context. Being born and raised in the United States has granted me the privilege of having easy access to healthcare (and other things associated with it like fresh food and water). Growing up, my parents would tell me stories of the miles that they have had to travel and the sacrifices that they have made in order to get basic health care for the rest of my family. This year, VMO has given me the opportunity to give back. What I look forward to most is connecting with the community and learning from them. I believe that this experience will not only cement my career aspirations in nursing but also allow me to grow in my Vietnamese-American identity. All in all, I'm truly excited to learn, understand, and serve! Although there are greater structural barriers to healthcare, and this trip alone will not fix the inequities that exist, big change starts small!

Some information about ACWP:
In 1999, ACWP started the Mobile Healthcare Program (MHP) which administers basic medical assistance to children and adults in rural areas, such as Binh Thanh, Cong Quan 1, Duong Hoa, Hai Duong, Huong Toan, Hong Tien, Huong Binh, Phong Thu and Quan An in Central Region of Vietnam. They have taken a horizontal approach to health care through community collaboration. They not only work towards stopping the spread of preventable disease (via vaccinations and mobile clinics) but also make efforts to increase the quality of life for the community by making education and food accessible.

With that said, I am grateful for your support and any donation that you are able to make! If you have any questions, comments or concerns do not hesitate to reach out to me (:

With Love, Leyna
