Hi, I am Taylor Tencate, Tyler's daughter's Aunt, and Tyler's friend.  I am writing this post because many people have been so kind as to ask what they can do to help Tyler’s family.  We have set up this page for anyone that wants to make a gift.  All donations will go to Casey Tencate, my sister and Tyler's daughter's mother, to support his 5-year-old daughter, Savannah.  Nothing will ever be able to replace Tyler but we are trying to help ease the burden for his family. What happened to Tyler was completely avoidable and this should have never happened.

Tyler’s daughter is left without a father.  His mother without a son.  His sister without a brother.  This world has lost a fun, loving, amazing man with so much to live for because our system is broken.

Tyler’s Story:  On August 2016, Tyler Lumar was victimized by a broken system which ultimately resulted in his death.

On August 18, 2016, at the age of 22, a medical clinic on the westside refused to prescribe Tyler certain medication for his chronic asthma.  The clinic accused Tyler of soliciting medication and CPD was called.  The officers arrived at the scene and advised Tyler that the clinic requested simply that he leave the premises.   Shortly thereafter, the same officers pursued Tyler, arresting him on a traffic warrant (issued by Lee County) for failure to make a $25 payment for a prior 2015 traffic violation.  The fine had been paid a few days late and the bench warrant had automatically been issued.  The warrant was never quashed after the payment was made.  CPD transferred Tyler to the 11th District station.

Lee County advised the Chicago Police Department that the warrant was for a traffic violation and that Tyler could bond out at the station by paying $50.00.  Nevertheless, CPD arrest reports stated “bond information unavailable,” placed an extradition hold on him, and refused to allow him to leave, even though he had $130.00 on his person.  At this point, none of Tyler’s family members had been notified. Later that evening Tyler experienced an asthma attack and was taken emergently to Mount Sinai Hospital.  He was treated and released back to CPD custody early on August 19, 2020.  His family was never notified of his medical treatment.

At approximately 9:00 a.m. on August 19, 2016, CPD transferred Tyler to Cook County Jail for a bond hearing; however, he never made it to the hearing.  Instead, Tyler ended up in the intensive care unit fighting for his life.

While awaiting bond hearing, another inmate sitting a few seats from Tyler dropped a bag of crack cocaine behind the bench on which Tyler was sitting.  Cook County Deputies wrongfully accused and detained Lumar of drug possession.  Then, instead of proceeding to bond court, CPD transferred Tyler back to the 11th District where he was left in a cell alone and was later found unconscious in his cell.

No charges were filed.

Tyler was wrongfully detained and then wrongfully accused of drug possession.

The hours spent in police custody were horrifying for Tyler:

-        Tyler was arrested due to an outdated warrant, for a traffic fine that had already been paid (both Tyler and his fiancé advised CPD that this fine had been paid)

-        Tyler was searched multiple times (between 4-8); no contraband was ever found on him.

-        Tyler was transported to the hospital in the middle of the night for treatment for his severe asthma, a condition he suffered from his entire life. His family was not informed. He spent several hours throughout the night at the hospital.

-        Tyler was brought back to the station and placed in a cell alone.  He was searched again prior to entering the cell.

-        While in the bullpen at Cook County, awaiting to be transferred to bond court, video surveillance shows another inmate tossing a pack of crack cocaine near Tyler. Officers accuse Tyler of carrying this on him.

-        Tyler is the returned to the 11th District, now facing narcotic charges, despite previous searches finding nothing on him.

-        Tyler is later found unconscious in his cell and is transported to the hospital. There is no video of what happened to him, due to ALL surveillance cameras allegedly being broken at the time.  The only witness was released with all charges dropped against him.  Despite numerous attempts, he refuses to speak to Tyler's attorney.

-        Tyler’s hospital room was guarded by Chicago police for hours not allowing loved ones in to see him, stating that he was in “police custody.”

-        Tyler spent the remaining 20 months of his life in a hospital bed, due to injuries he sustained while in police custody.

-        Tyler lost the fight for his life on April 18, 2018, at just 24 years old.  The events that took place while in police custody were avoidable. There should have never been a warrant for his arrest. CPD should have released him on bond at the 11th District station; he should have never been held overnight. The complete disrespect for his life is more than heartbreaking.

Tyler left behind an amazing daughter, family, and friends.  Tyler was a kind, caring, charismatic young man, with a smile that could light up the whole world.  The love he had for his daughter was deep and never-ending.

We are so grateful for the love and support we have received over the years and want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts.  Tyler will live on forever through his daughter and will be carried in our hearts.  #TylerTough #TylerLumar #KeepFighting #JusticeForTyler
