Transitions Initiative Internship
has offered me an internship in Addis Ababa to work on sex trafficking prevention with young people aging out of institutionalized care (e.g., orphanages). I will be working with youth who have recently aged out of care, documenting their experiences, identifying particular vulnerabilities that can lead to sex/labor trafficking, and re-designing prevention curriculum based on these interviews. I will also be sharing the experience of these children and young people with the blogosphere, helping to educate Americans about the realities of life in institutional care.
This is an amazing opportunity to link communities on different sides of the world and to help effect meaningful and sustainable change. Like most internships, this position is unpaid and I must foot the bill for all of my travel and living expenses. You can contribute to the fund throughout the summer.
Without support and education, these young people are at increased risk for becoming victims of human trafficking. IOFA is currently working to empower youth in orphanages to transition into a safe, secure, self-determined adulthood.
Here's the initial research report on youth aging out of care in Ethiopia. I'll be continuing the work this summer! http://www.luc.edu/media/lucedu/chrc/pdfs/ET Assessment Report FINAL.pdf
