Tour for Diversity in Medicine

“Unless the current trend is reversed, our country will see a growing ethnic and racial disconnect between those who receive care and those who provide that care.” — Former U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, MD

The Tour for Diversity in Medicine (T4D) is a grassroots effort to educate, cultivate, and inspire future health care professionals of diverse backgrounds. Through a day-long set of workshops, T4D brings premedical/predental enrichment activities to the very campuses that house potential future under-minority in medicine (URM) physicians and dentists. T4D provides groups of unexposed students a chance to learn from and meet with visiting physicians, dentists and medical students at their home institutions. T4D provides initial and honest exposure to careers in the medical field and opportunities for their educational advancement. Since our inaugural Tour in February 2012, T4D has successfully hosted more than 2700 diverse high school and college students on 34 campuses across 22 states and the District of Columbia.

Our T4D Mentors are our true strength - included are young practicing physicians (allopathic, osteopathic, and podiatric) and dentists, as well as medical and dental students, from different educational backgrounds, with different specialty interests, and with a variety of dual degrees.  Mentors are specifically chosen to highlight the stages of growth from young student to young professional (up to 5-6 years of practice).   A pre-health/medical advisor is also include to expand our capability for outreach and education.  T4D Mentors not only serve as workshop leaders, but also network with the students for further conversation and mentoring.

Previous students described the Tour:

“Today I am planning my next step. Without the tour I would not know what was next.”

“I will most definitely get involved in the programs I learned about, takes the information about the schools and start applying to them, spread the word out to my friends, and one day become a dentist or a doctor and tell my students my story.”

T4D is seeking to raise $30,000 to help fund our next Tour.  The Tour will span 3 days and includes stops at 3 different college/university campuses.  We will be traveling with 10 physicians, dentists and medical student volunteer Mentors from across the country and we are hoping to reach more than 500 underrepresented minority students.

Your tax deductible donation will help T4D build awareness of the health science professions within underrepresented communities by providing funding to cover operational and logistical expenses of the Tour.

Please join T4D in bridging the gap between underrepresented communities and healthcare.
