Here at the Spectator, we like to say that Journalism is the art of reaching-- for stories, for truth, and, most importantly, for people. We’ve reached out to the community as faithfully and as truthfully as possible for the last six years. Far from our place would it be to say we have been perfect in that regard: we’ve had our fair share of mistakes, and the road has never once been even. Yet, everytime we have failed, we have done what has often seemed the most difficult thing to do. We have, inevitably, invariably, reached out and tried again.

This perseverance would have been impossible, were it not for the unshakable belief that we have something worth keeping. That, in the few years it took us to grow from five people to thirty dedicated reporters, we found something worth fighting for. Worth every mistake, every do-over, every angry backlash. What we found, amidst myriad trials, was the strength of spirit needed to tell the truth, even when it wasn’t popular. To debate, not only with our opposition, but also with our friends. To recognize the importance of free speech, and of empowering student voices in a system that so often leaves us voiceless. Through our work at the Titan Spectator, and in service to this community, we found purpose.

Yet, we have also found a home. We have, in the process of learning, created a safe space that we all rely on daily. We have, due to the very nature of the beast, become familiar with vulnerability, and it has made this community, and the people inside it, our most valuable confidants. We share in laughter and celebration when one of us succeeds, and in tears when one of us fails. We have rallied, over and over again, behind members of our community who suffer from mental and physical illnesses that make it hard to even come to school. For some, this community has been the one thing between them and dropping out entirely. In a community that has been ravaged in recent years by the effects of teen suicide, we give each other hope-- that thing with feathers-- and in return, we learn the most valuable skill this program, and any program could ever hope to teach; Compassion. Through the creation of safe space, a home for people who sometimes don’t have one at the end of the day, we have learned love at the hands of our peers. We have learned how to help each other, and how to stand by someone when they really need you.

Today, we face the destruction of this program. Careless and inconsiderate budget distribution has left our community homeless. On Tuesday morning, we sat in the same room we have for the last two years and mourned the theft of the only home West Salem High School has even given us. The home we built, and grew, and worked to make our own. There is a very good chance that by fall, there will be no Titan Spectator. That we will be dissolved, and with us, the community, empowerment, and platform we provide.

We have never gone quietly in the face of injustice, and this will be no different. Over the next month, we will continue to resist this proposal, and we ask for your support. We have spent the last six years reaching out to our community-- we beg, now, that you reach for us. Help us save our home.

You can help by calling Superintendent Christy Perry at 503-399-3001, or by contacting Mr. Miller through the main office. We started this gofundme as a way of making up for lost funds, in an attempt to keep this paper alive. Any donations are an act of solidarity, and we are in dire need of it. As we move forward, we will release new information on how you can stay involved.

Thank you,

The Titan Spectator
