Artistry in the Arctic

Hi! If you read below you will see part of my original request to help cover airfare but that was donated through vouchers and frequent flier miles so I took that $1000 off the total needed. Yay! To all you generous, amazing supporters. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. xoxo

Read on:

Formally trained as a biologist, I recently expanded my focus to include writing and photography as a means of connecting more people with the wild world. Combining these skills is a way of fostering innovative thinking and dialogue between people and disciplines with the intent of bringing positive change to the environment. To that end, I applied for and was accepted to an art and science residency titled The Arctic Circle in Svalbard, Norway, in fall 2018.

I intend to create a written and photographic weaving of my journals from an earlier time spent in the Arctic, with climate change science, and the experience of returning to the Arctic as a writer and photographer 18 years after my first visit as a biologist.

I am requesting funding to cover the residency fee of USD 6,400, ~$1,000 for airfare to Oslo, Norway, cost of a hostel for first and last night's lodging, and for cold weather gear for an Arctic autumn. I already purchased a plane ticket ($340) from Oslo to Svalbard.

Thanks to the generosity of many of you, the fee deposit of $2,000 is PAID! The remaining $4,400 is due on 10 June 2018. The residency fee includes all meals and lodging during the residency (30 September – 17 October). Through two generous supporters, I will receive air vouchers and frequent flier miles to get to Europe, so the flights are secure.

Supporting this project will help create awareness around climate change and the Arctic- a place of supreme beauty and global importance. It will allow a more open dialogue with a greater audience - I anticipate that sharing my photos and writing during the residency (internet access dependent) and after the journey, will have an exponential impact as you send the stories on to your friends and family. I hope that a real-time experience in the Arctic shared by all of you fabulous supporters will inspire more climate awareness, more thoughtful treatment of the environment, more personal accountability, more positive discussion, more, more, exponentially more connection with our existence on this planet.
