Digital Cinema Projector Fund

Tax deductible
The Grand Theater, a non-profit performing arts center located in downtown Ellsworth at the crossroads of Hancock County, is seeking funds to complete its Digital Cinema Projector Campaign. As of January 18, we have raised $153,000 of the $165,000 total necessary for this project. We only have $12,000 left to go.

If you would like to see newly-released films closer to their national release date, if you are a regular attendee of the Metropolitan Operas, or National Theater Live, if you love the adrenaline-producing, adventure films of the Banff Film Festival and couldn’t imagine a winter without it, if you enjoy documentaries, French films and classics and festivals like the Manhattan Short, this projector would serve YOU!

We have a need.

The Grand’s projector is being held together with proverbial duct tape. The speakers are inadequate for use during films. Film-goers are hearing a muddled version of what the film producer intended. The current 1938 glass bead screen is ripped and doesn’t have the picture brightness available through current screen technology. When we show a newly released film, it’s often eight weeks or more after the national release date. Many people head to Bangor in the meantime. The National Theater Live broadcast is enjoyed by many, but for some the British accents are challenging to decipher. Finally, as the film industry moves entirely to digital, without a digital projector we will eventually be excluded from showing any film content.

There’s a solution to all of this!

With a new digital cinema projector system, we will gain these benefits:

-  Dramatic improvement of the picture quality and sound
-  See current release films sooner! (4-6 weeks out instead of 2 months out or more)
-  Enjoy musicals and stage plays from Broadway to Ellsworth through simulcast
-  Subtitles for National Theater Live broadcasts
-  Ability to show films in 3-D – the only one of its kind in Hancock County

This campaign began with a $50,000 matching challenge gift from a generous anonymous donor. Because of the support of patrons in the community, we met and surpassed that challenge!
