Many believe the state of live music in America is in trouble, especially as it applies to the development of local scenes. With the onslaught of techno-dominated pop music mainly featuring monotonous beats and mindless lyrics, members of the youth generation, who have always been the life blood of the music industry, either have very little interest in the offerings of major music sources, get their music directly off the internet, or flock to DJ driven dance clubs. Even in the bars and restaurants, who generally cater to a wider demographic, the trend has turned away from presenting quality live music offerings to Karaoke, internet jukeboxes and DJs. Even what is considered as live music is often just someone singing along with prerecorded tracks. As a result, live music venues that focus on presenting high quality live, local music have become few and far-between. New venues that HAVE been opening up across the country tend to focus on already established national acts.

In Houston the closing of several dedicated music venues, especially those that featured roots-based American music such as Folk, Country, Roots-Rock and Roll, Jazz, Blues, etc., has left a significant void. Although the Houston music scene is often perceived as existing in the shadow of the well-promoted and media-driven Austin scene, those who have been around it know that the musicians who call Houston home take a back-seat to no one when it comes to creativity, passion and musicianship.  The current situation though has diminished the public's ability to access the local music which in turn diminishes the musicians' ability to connect with an audience. A new venue that provides a home for both performers and listeners of roots American music has been badly needed. The Americana is helping to fill that void.

3  years ago, I started a campaign to establish such a venue. The reality is: In order to sustain such an endeavor, a solid business concept would need to support it. A simple Concert hall venue, in today's economy and social climate, as applied to the stated mission is ,in my opinion, unsustainable. I have developed a concept that brings together American music, art and cuisine, all existing in a  comfortable social space and environment.

A little about me: My name is Mark Zeus. I'm a Houston-based Singer-Songwriter, Musician, Sound-tech, Teacher and Event Host. You can read my full bio and get more info at www.markzeus.com More info on The Americana can be accessed at www.theamericanahouston.com

Our Mission Statement:
OUR MISSION: to provide and maintain a comfortable and fun environment that functions as a venue for performance of American Music, an eatery for American cuisine, a modest gallery for Local Art, and an overall social setting for those who enjoy, as well as those who perform and create, the music and art. This venue will also support and develop new and emerging talent in Greater Houston through education, networking and performance opportunity.

Once the business is solidly established, the next phase will be the development of a non-profit which will connect the artists to a stronger presence in community outreach and education.  I also have a vision of bringing this concept to other markets. My background and travels have brought me close to a some other music scenes. But, first things first..MZ
