The Liz Holmes Fund

Donation protected
The Liz Holmes Fund was set up in memory of Liz Holmes, a warm, witty, vibrant woman whose life and death impacted on many friends and colleagues around the world. Your donations via this site and proceeds from the sale of a tribute recipe book Lunches with Liz (see below), will help fund three charities, one set up in Liz's name by local colleagues in Zimbabwe, and two that were close to Liz’s heart.

The Liz Holmes Hospices Trust  in Zimbabwe aims to help people suffering from terminal illnesses. There are few palliative care systems in Zimbabwe, and this charity provides training and support for caregivers to help terminally ill patients.

St. Oswald's Hospice where Liz's mother spent periods of time over the years receiving wonderful care.

Christian Aid in Alnwick was consistently supported by Liz as a committed coordinator during Christian Aid week and she helped raise thousands of pounds for projects across the world.

Please help spread the word about The Liz Holmes Fund and share the link with your friends and family on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!

Who was Liz?
Liz Holmes was my smart, funny, sassy and caring friend, who died all too young of ovarian cancer, aged 57. Liz's friendship impacted on me in many ways. In fact she most probably saved my life. She told me about the symptoms of ovarian cancer. I was lucky and my cancer was caught early, thanks to Liz.

In a lifetime dedicated to others, Liz worked with different charities in many countries. These included Oxfam and the International Women's Development Agency in Cambodia, Help Age in Tanzania, and, more recently with Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) as Regional Programme Manager based in London. This was one of her favourite jobs, in which Liz worked tirelessly supporting staff in many countries in Asia and Africa.

Everyone wanted to be Liz's friend, and our memories of Liz often relate to sharing food and drinks with her. Whether it was as a child eating potato pancakes with her sister Margaret, or a Christmas lunch in London with Heather and Deborah seen in the photo below, a 'chip omelette' in Tanzania, or fizz, chips and mayonnaise in Cambodia; we all loved time enjoying food with Liz. In recognition of the joy of sharing food with Liz, I have compiled a recipe book: Lunches with Liz . The book is filled with Liz's favourite recipes (which she copied out by hand into special notebooks), and includes anecdotes and photos provided by Liz's friends and family. It is beautifully illustrated by my niece and my sister. If you would like to buy a copy of this book (cost £10 - plus £6.99 postage), click here . All proceeds (minus the printing costs) will be donated to the Liz Holmes Fund.

More information
Unfortunately there is no option to claim Gift Aid on donations as the rules for Gift Aid are that it can only be offered to UK taxpayers, and only for donations to UK charities that are registered in the UK. It has not been possible to go through the complicated process of seeking charitable status. In addition, there are restrictive rules, which means that some are not eligible for charitabe status in the UK (for example, The Liz Holmes Hospices Trust is a registered charity in Zimbabwe). Liz would be so proud and humbled that a charity was set up in her name and of the work they will do as a result of your donations.

If you only wish to give to a charity registered in the UK in order to claim Gift Aid, of course you are more than welcome to donate directly to St Oswald's Hospice and Christian Aid, by clicking on the links above.
