My husband and I live in Morganville, NJ with our seven children (yes, seven). My husband is a volunteer firefighter for our town, has served as Fire Commissioner and was on the Zoning Board. I held a seat on the Swim Board and volunteered for many other things.
We have had many obstacles to deal with in a short period of time. Our son, Keith Jr, was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect at my 20 week sonogram. He had heart surgery when he was one day old. Tired, devastated, and broke, we moved on. And we tried to return to a normal life. We thought we had gotten beyond that devastating time, then on November 15, 2012, our son Sean, 2 years old at the time, was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia. SAA is complete bone marrow failure. We were told he would need a bone marrow transplant from a sibling to survive. Sean's six siblings were not a match for a transplant.
In January 2013, an alternative treatment called ATG (horse) was done. After 12 weeks, the ATG was deemed unsuccessful. We were told we would have to move forward with an unrelated marrow donor. The doctors at CHOP decided to hold off on the transplant.
Since then, Sean has remained stable and we have even seen some improvements.
During the past year, Sean has survived by receiving multiple transfusions per week of red blood and platelets. He has been hospitalized numerous times due to a low immune system. And he has had biopsies performed on him many times.
Sean is also on several medications, some give at home and some given at the hospital.
While we deal with Aplastic Anemia, yet another devastating blow has been dealt to my family. The day before Sean's last biopsy, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
While we received good news on the results from Sean's biopsy, there will be no return to normal for our family and we shift gears from one battle to another, this time without a break in between.
This is truly too much for one family to handle. And while we have insurance, the cost of co payments and co insurance and medications are spiraling out of control.
Please donate to our medical fund to help offset the costs of our tremendous medical bills. No donation is too small!! They add up and everything is more than we had before! Also, please share our page, the more people who hear our story is hopefully the more help we will receive.
Thank you and please pray for our family.
