Our friend Michael
Rogan suffered a severe and traumatic brain injury when
he fell head first down two flights of stairs in his home on
Saturday, July 13th. He sustained multiple skull and facial fractures
and lost consciousness instantly. Paramedics arrived 9 minutes later to find
Mike in critical condition: significant blood loss,
unresponsive pupillary reflex, and acute respiratory failure.
Due to the severity of his injuries, Mike was life-flighted to a nearby hospital. Emergency room staff worked for several hours before Mike was stable enough to be admitted into the intensive care unit. After 3 long days, doctors could finally say they expected him to survive.
Mike remained comatose for weeks, fighting with fluid in his lungs, brain swelling, recurrent fevers, unstable blood pressure, and leaking cerebrospinal fluid. Despite these complications, he still required surgery, including: an incision in his neck and insertion of a tube into his windpipe; a brain incision for tube insertion and placement of a monitor to measure intracranial pressure; and a lung scope for removal of mucous plugs. During this time, Mike survived on life support: mechanical ventilation, tube feeding, and a central IV line.
Day after day, he has beaten the odds. Not only did Mike survive, he slowly regained consciousness. He began opening his eyes, sitting up, speaking, standing, walking, and remembering. Some would say his physical recovery has been miraculous.
But now Mike is facing a new challenge. Shortly after his accident, he was terminated from his place of employment. Now without an income, without medical insurance, and unable to work for the time being, his medical bills have continued to pile up.
He has a long road ahead of him. With the support of his son John and his fiancée Robin, Mike continues to improve every day. Although his recovery thus far has been amazing, there is still a massive amount of work and rehabilitation he needs to go through. The added pressure of not knowing how to pay for his medical expenses weighs heavily on him. Moreover, the possibility of losing his home has become overwhelming.
Mike was just getting back on his feet after having been off work for over a year due to serious illness. At the time of the accident, he had been employed again for a only a few months. Because of this, his resources are completely exhausted. Mike urgently needs assistance in order to avoid foreclosure on his home, provide for basic needs, and remain in rehabilitation services.
Michael is a father, brother, uncle, future husband, friend, teammate, believer, and humanitarian. As he improves, he is able to embrace these roles more and more. Recovery from a severe brain injury takes time. He continues to regain appropriate cognitive functioning and his prognosis is very encouraging--it is possible for him to make a full recovery.
