SUNSHINE AFRICA SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT-HELP STOP CHILD ABUSE IN AFRICA
AID Kenya Foundation ‌ ‌, a humanitarian aid and development assistance charity in Kenya in strategic partnership with the Kenya Welfare Foundation, a nongovernmental organization directed by Patriot Stephen Kinuthia of Paris, France; and Uwezo Lifeskills, a community based organization in Mukuru Slums ‌, Nairobi, Kenya has initiated Sunshine Africa Sustainable Development Project to support orphaned and vulnerable children and widowed women in respect to Global Goal's Clean Water and Sanitation; Quality Education; Gender Equality; No Poverty; No Hunger; Good Health; and Reduced Inequality on Children and Women living in Mukuru Slums, Nairobi.
PREAMBLE
“Children living in the slums are at a higher risk of being abused physically and psychologically even by the very people who are supposed to take care of them like guardians and teachers. In situations where the children are ignorant of their rights, it becomes very difficult for them to report any forms of violations to the authorities.”
“We also organize community outreach events through which the pupils use art forms like plays and skits to express themselves and create awareness about their rights while rallying the community to unite against child abuse.” Project’s coordinator, Mr. Caleb Odhiambo working with a child protection programme in Mukuru slums
Children in the slums of Mukuru continue to undergo various forms of neglect, abuse and exploitation and remain marginalized thus affecting the attainment of their basic rights which affects their meeting of their goals in life. Despite the Government being a signatory to both International child protection treaties like the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and inherent National policies geared towards protecting children, little action has been forthcoming especially in implementing these legal binding documents. The end results of such acts of omission and commission is the increased vulnerability of children living in the slums of Mukuru. Parents who are the main duty bearers of children have neglected their responsibilities mainly due to the high poverty levels which push them to focus more on meeting the very basic of needs-food, shelter and survival.
Objectives of the child protection sensitization event:

Ongoing community sensitization and awareness creation is an integral part of any process that seeks to ensure the issues close to their heart remains in the lips of all as this ensures that the community remains aware and takes responsibility to safeguard the children whom the sensitization processes aims at protecting.

The Mukuru event taking place when children are in the community for their April school recess presents a good opportunity to engage with the children in a participatory event that will not only act as an opportunity to hear the voices and appreciate children’s talents through various forms of art including poems, dance songs and other performing arts; the event will also be an opportunity to record and officially launch the famed Mukuru Child protection anthem, “Haki za Watoto”, a catchy song on the rights of children composed and sang by Kioko aka K.O a residence of Mukuru slums who have survived in the same community and he been able to tell what the children’s a facing in the song that has been used to sensitize and create awareness on the plight of the child living in Mukuru and by extension the Kenyan Child.
K.O also been awarded as best male artist of the year in Mukuru awards year 2013
