Background
Over 3,000,000 refugees are registered in Turkey alone, of which only 275,000 have formal living arrangements. The beautiful coastal city of Izmir has welcomed 150,000 refugees to live in informal settlements, meaning they do not have access to many basic necessities such as food and water, as well as health care, education and social services. These individuals have risked their lives to escape a war torn area leaving behind their homes in hopes for a safe future with better opportunities. During their treacherous journey they often lose alot, arriving with just the clothes on their back, sick and hungry but are still hopeful for a brighter future.
What am I going to do?
As an individual who has been raised with the notion of giving back and taking care of others, I am hoping to volunteer with Imece Inisiyatifi for two weeks this upcoming September. To help their neighbors, Turkish students created this organization, to support those in their time of need. They are a volunteer based organization and therefore do not require any administrative fees. I’ll be aiding in their ongoing projects in Izmir such as:
Mobile Education Project: aiming to teach refugee children Turkish and Latin alphabet as well as basics in math.
Distribution of supplies: mostly hygiene products and baby supplies, distributed to those most in need.
Imece Education Village: will offer courses on Turkish language, legal concerns and serve as an information center.
I will be in Europe for a conference, therefore will have full funding to volunteer with this organization. I am looking to my network of family, friends and those who believe in helping others in need to support me in this journey. I would like to request a donation towards this group in hopes to create a bigger and lasting impact. The donations collected will go towards supporting the ongoing projects mentioned above. Please do not worry about the size of your gift, even a $10 donation will go a long way in supporting vulnerable peoples.
What will the donations be used for?
100% of the money you give, will be donated to Imece Inisiyatifi to support the projects mentioned above. It will be not used as funding to get me to Turkey as my trip is already paid for through work.
