"Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward. For there you have been, and there you will always long to return."
-Leonardo da Vinci

About the Opportunity:

For me, an architecture student, this quote encompasses the very essence of studying abroad. Studying abroad is almost a necessity as an architecture student. I have learned a lot about architecture by studying locally in Washington, DC, but going abroad and studying in Paris will enable me to expand my knowledge and skills in the world of architecture"”incorporating European styles and ideas.

Studying abroad will allow me to open my mind to new ways of learning and understanding my true passion and calling in life: architecture. As an architecture student in Paris, I will be able to learn about a new culture and get to know this culture on a personal level- an essential experience in the field of architecture. Architects are public servants, serving their clients, whether it be a city or a single person in need. By taking advantage of the formal and informal learning opportunities that studying abroad provides, I will be able to expand my mind and skill-set in new ways and, in the future, refer back to what I have learned and apply it in my work with underserved populations.

About Me:

My name is Maria Lumbre and I am a rising senior majoring in Architecture and Planning at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. I took an interest in the field after a family trip to the Philippines a few years ago and dove right into studying architecture by completing a summer studio at Catholic University during my junior year in high school.

I am a scholar of the Honors Program at Catholic as well as the Phi Eta Sigma Honors Society and the Tau Sigma Delta Honors Society. In addition, I have been on the Dean's List since my fall semester, freshman year.

Why Architecture?:

I took upon studying architecture as my calling after my experience going back home to the Philippines and taking the summer architecture studio at Catholic. The Philippines became a totally different environment from what once seemed so familiar to me. I became more aware of those who are sick and in need. A call to service has led me on this path of aiding those who are underserved. By majoring in this architecture, I can be prepared not only for helping those around me here in the United States, but also keep in mind the environment, challenges, and rewards of rehabilitating a third-world country with my services as an architect.

About My Need:

I am the oldest of three children living in Washington, DC. My family emigrated here from the Philippines in pursuit of the American Dream. While my parents and family do everything we can to scrimp and save, there is not extra money available at the end of each month to provide for amazing opportunities like this.

Currently, I receive financial aid towards my tuition in college, but face a $9,000 gap in additional expenses of studying abroad that financial aid will not cover. I'd appreciate any financial help that you can provide to provide me with the opportunity to study abroad and learn more about the architecture fie
