Short Term Rentals are NO VACATION

For the  Rest of Us!

Imagine building your dream home -- a home to spend relaxing evenings on the patio watching sunsets, a home that you planned on making memories with your family in, a home to retire and spend the rest of your life in.  You move into your dream home and life is just perfect, that is, until you are awoken one night to loud blaring music coming from the neighboring house.  You think that this is just a one night occurrence but then it turns into just about every night.  You discover that your neighbor has decided to turn their home into a party house; a Nightly /  Short Term Rental  /  Vacation Rental.  This is where your dream turns into your nightmare.  This is our nightmare.

Our serene and peaceful neighborhood is being destroyed and invaded by the Short Term Rental industry.  The house next-door to us is rented like any motel/hotel.  The minimum stay is two nights, and it is currently advertised to have sleeping space for up to 16-25 people.  The rental price per person is so low that it regularly draws fraternities, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and spring break college groups that party (LOUDLY) around the clock: especially on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and into Sunday mid-morning.  These renters are on ‘vacation’ and have paid to ‘have a good time’ at the expense of the surrounding residents.

We have tried talking to the owners, coming to a compromise so that we can peacefully co-exist but we were met with anger, threats and being accused of endangering their business, and told not to have any direct contact with them or their renters!  We have tried calling the sheriff, but that turns out to be useless because the owners are not held accountable.  The renters are quiet for 20-30 minutes, then the partying mercilessly resumes.  We have had to endure outdoor karaoke and electric guitars all hours of the night.  We have had to endure foul language and music that is not suitable for most people, let alone our visiting grandchildren.  Our driveway has been blocked, our yard trespassed and urinated in.  We have even been video-taped by the renters who thought that our property was part of the rental compound.  We have become prisoners in our own home.  We just cannot endure anymore.  We thought about moving but we are unable to sell since no one wants to live next to a party hotel.

Words cannot describe the feeling of devastation these Nightly / Short-Term Rentals / Vacation Rentals have caused not only to us, but to our neighbors.  Not only do we feel helpless and hopeless, so does our community.

We started to rally property owners in our small neighborhood in hopes of making changes to the deed restrictions.  This is the only truly effective way to cause a meaningful change for our neighborhood without the help of the City Council and the POA.  We even had the backing of our neighbors and had enough signatures to change the deeds, but the owners of these Vacation/Short-Term Rentals came back at us with a lawsuit.  They have sued for a temporary injunction to stop the filing of our deed restriction changes and are asking for a judgment against us for up to $100,000.

We are devastated and in shock!  We are the victims here and yet we are being treated as the criminals!  How can this be?

Do not think for one second that this is an isolated incident and could not happen to you.  Do a quick google search and you will find that this is starting to occur in other neighborhoods and my story could be your story!

We need your help to take a stand for our neighborhood, our elderly neighbors, our children and the growing families moving in.  We need your help in establishing a precedence for other neighborhoods in crisis which someday could be yours!

Please help us fight the lawsuit and make a change so that we can enjoy our neighborhoods. Our goal is to establish an avenue to help other neighborhoods who are also being threatened and bullied by Short Term Rental Owners.

Any help would be great help! Even sharing our story would be of help! Any monetary help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
