A Hook n’ a Prayer for Steve!
On Tuesday, March 26, 2019, our dad, Steve Gerrish, was in a serious car accident that brought him to the Emergency Room of South Shore Hospital. Thankfully, he had minimal injuries from the accident itself, but the results of an MRI and CT scan discovered a large and aggressive brain tumor - a Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). Without surgery, the doctor estimated he would have 12 weeks left to live.
A week later, Tuesday April 2, 2019, Steve underwent a 10 hour brain surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The surgery was successful and the surgeon reported she was able to remove approximately 98% of the tumor. The next day, he was talking with his family, walking, and appeared to be on the road to recovery.
On Saturday, April 6, 2019, Steve faced a set back in his recovery when his care team determined he had an infection which was causing meningitis. He underwent another operation to “wash-out” the original surgical site and has had four drains placed in his head for excessive swelling.
Steve is still in the ICU at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, fighting the infection day by day.
After Steve fights off the infection and makes it out of the hospital, he still faces a long road ahead to treat his remaining cancer. Dad’s diagnosis was very unexpected and the financial impact is likely going to be substantial. We are starting this fundraiser to be able to support him in whichever ways arise.
