Once upon a time, several years ago, Rose went back home to Haiti from her new home in Bridgeport, CT, to visit her brother and his family. One beautiful day, before the earthquake came and made life even more difficult, Rose was enjoying a picnic lunch on the lawn with her nephews. As they ate, children slowly came out of the woods and sat silently behind her nephews.
When they were done eating, her oldest nephew gathered all their leftover food, and gave it to the eldest of the children who had gathered, who then distributed it to all the other children. Touched by the generosity of her nephews, and the obvious need in the community, Rose began a feeding program in the area once a day. This simple meal of rice and beans cooked over an open fire was soon the main daily meal for over 100 children.
Hiring staff to run this simple outdoor fire and kettle, Rose soon used a one room building to begin an afterschool tutoring program for the children. Following the devastating earthquake, the tutoring program moved into a new building that Rose built, which has become and is still the ONLY school in the area - without Rose, many of these children would barely eat, and certainly would have no schooling.
Rose uses the salery she makes as a nurses aid in CT to fund all of this, which means that some days there is no money for a meal, and no money to pay the cooks and teachers, but still, Rose perseveres. When Rose became a nurse's aid to a beloved parishoner at Christ Church in Easton, CT, her story came to our attention, and our little country parish has become her partner in Mission.
At this time, Rose has had to ask each of the families with children in the school to pay $100 for each child for the upcomming school year, a request which the families simply cannot do. Rose has asked this to help the program continue, even when she is between jobs here in the US. $100 is an insurmountable fee for the families Rose serves, but not to us!
There are currently 65 children enrolled, so allowing for a few extra, let's raise $7000 and keep this beautiful ray of light going in Ti Paradis, Haiti! What, after all, is a Paradise in Haiti if the children cannot eat, let alone learn? Join us! All donations go DIRECTLY to the cost of paying teachers, and buying supplies, food, etc, Rose takes nothing, but gives everything.
