I am the Florida State Elks Association Historical Commemorative Projects Liaison. Our mission is to celebrate historical moments and significant achievements in the history of our great nation; to ensure our great history is never forgotten and that future generations continue to learn about our Defenders of Freedom.
If you think about it, we no longer see WW I parades or celebrations honoring the brave Americans who gave so much for this effort. We can and must prevent this from happening to the "Greatest Generation" who preserved our freedoms fighting in WW II. One way we can do this is by recognizing them at commemorative events.
Last year, we raised $48,000+ our of our $50,000 goal to take WWll Veterans to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the end of WWll in Washington DC (se photos above). This year, we've again set the goal at $50,000 to take our WWll Veterans to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor December 6-10, 2016 in Honolulu. There will be 4 days of festivites highlighted by an international parade in Honolulu and ceremonies at the USS Arizona Memorial.
As always, we bring our WWll veterans and their chosen caretaker to these events at no cost to them. This includes all transportation, hotels, meals, event theme designed tours, and of course participation in the ceremonies. This is a new year and a new event. We are again asking for your financial support and prayers in order for this event to be successful. Our WWll Veterans are dying at the rate of 1,000+ a day. This will be the last major WWll Commemoration we will be hosting for them to participate. PLEASE Pray about making a substantional donation to make this possible. We do not want to exclude any WWll Veteran from attending.
The Florida State Elks Association donated $25,000 for this event and the goal is to match it by raising an additional $25,000.
Presently, we have more veterans excited and eager to attend these historical celebrations than funds to send them. Please consider making a tax deductible donation to help make a WWll veteran’s dream come true. The photos above show our WWll veterans participating in the 70th Anniversary of the End of WWll this past November in Washington, DC; All of us volunteering to assist pay our own way which affords more funding for the veterans.
Planning is underway to commemorate and celebrate the Korean War in Washington DC, the 50th Anniversary of Viet Nam in Washington DC and Honolulu, WWI Commemoration, Veteran's Day Parades in various cities, and the Civil War in Gettysburg. On the radar, is long range planning for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
