***** ORIGINAL POST BELOW *****

My friends Oleg and Dasha became parents for the second time, recently. They welcomed their baby girl, Sophia, into the world on December 18th at 4:02pm.

Sophia is a precious baby girl who was born with a sigfinicant heart defect. Her complex diagnosis is as follows:

- Double outlet right ventricle.
- Small mitral valve and left ventricle.
- Absent pulmonary valve.
- Enlarged pulmonary arteries.
- Single ventricle.

I'll have Oleg and Dasha take the story from here:

"I can’t even begin to simplify what each of these terms mean. But one thing that stunned us was the fact that none of the cardiologists have ever seen this combination of defects in one heart at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

We found out news of Sophia’s heart condition on the day we found out we were having a baby girl(gender scan).

Something that Dasha has struggled with all pregnancy was abnormally high fluid levels. So after her first amnio reduction we received even more dreadful news. Sophia has DiGeorge syndrome. It’s a disorder caused by a small missing piece of chromosome 22.

Sophia Grace Katrechko was born at UW Medical Center. She was immediately rushed to Seattle Children’s Hospital and admitted into Their Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) due to a very unstable heart and difficulty breathing. For the next 8 hours doctors and nurses rushed to try and stabilize her. Using all heart and blood medication at their disposal to help bring her heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels up. After a blood transfusion they finally were able to bring her numbers up to a tolerable level. This was short lived. At midnight, being only 9 hours old she was rushed to the operating room for an emergency operation. We were blessed with the Surgeon that was on call that night.

Surgery went well. But when it came time to warm up her body post operation something went wrong. So the doctor was forced to put baby Sophia on life support (ECMO).

It has now been 9 days. The CICU nurses and doctors have tried twice to wean Sophia off of ECMO with no success. Every day she is on this machine it is costing around $15,000.  With each attempt she has grown stronger but with a few setbacks. We are hoping and praying that the next time they try to remove her she will be strong enough to take over on her own."

It is clear that the road to recovery for baby Sophia will be a long one and the cost to support her journey will be an overwhelming one. Oleg and Dasha are asking for your prayers and for your support in any way possible to help them reach their goal in the coming months if not years ahead. Here is a summary breakdown of what their estimated medical expenditure will be:

ECMO (9 days so far and counting) - 15k / per day
CICU stay (9 days so far and counting) - 5k / per day
Emergency Heart Surgery - 150-200k +

Having to worry about finances when your baby is fighting for her life should be the last thing any parent should have to go through. Please join me in supporting them on this difficult, yet hopeful, journey  to recovery for their precious miracle baby, Sophia.
