A Lifelong Dream......
Since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to open a shoe store to sell large size shoes. Imagine being in middle school and wearing a size eleven, medium shoe. Now imagine going into shoe stores trying to find a size eleven young girl’s shoe. Let me help you. There was no dainty, pretty, girly, cute shoes for me. No, they brought out orthopedic shoes for someone’s grandmother. I had to resort to wearing a size 10 so I could look and feel like other girls my age. I also did not like gym class because I would have to wear men’s tennis shoes that were big and bulky. I refused, so most of the time I just wore my socks in gym class. I don’t know how I even received a passing grade. It was so painful growing up with large feet. No one my age had large feet. I felt so isolated and so different.
Having a shoe store was something that I have talked about for a long time. I was disappointed and discouraged several times but I was determined that my dream would come true no matter what.
I did my research and found distributors who would allow me to purchase only large sizes and using all of my retirement money, Soles 4 U opened its doors March 2012 specializing in large size women's shoes. At Soles 4 U, we assist each customer with trying on shoes, sizing/measuring for correct fit and making everyone feel comfortable and welcome. Customer service is very important to us. The opportunity to make every woman with an extraordinary sole feel beautiful is one of the reasons why we are in business. It makes my day when a woman with an extraordinary sole comes in and gets excited about being able to try on a shoe right off the shelf.
I am now going on five years in business and have never borrowed any money for the business. However, retirement money is long gone and I am not ready to give up the business and I am not ready to put myself out there with loans.
I am now currently located in an office building where I don’t get the foot traffic; therefore, it is imperative that I advertise (print, radio, vending, etc.) to attract new customers and to get more traffic flow. I also need to purchase new merchandise in time for the Kentucky Derby, plan several pop up shops, purchase new point of sale equipment and I would also like to expand my hours, but to accomplish this, I need the support from my family, friends and anyone interested in contributing to my lifelong dream, Soles 4 U.
