Help Grant’s Social Justice Film

Donation protected
My name is Grant Carsten. I’m a 20-year-old University of Utah film student, with a fiery passion for creating meaningful Social Justice Narratives in my lifetime.

For 8 months, I’ve spent every spare minute creating my first feature, Sanctuary Dream.

In Sanctuary Dream, an Autistic teen battles to escape a lifetime of physical, financial and verbal domestic abuse. This difficult transformation creates an ignition to self-grow; involving the tales of two possible sequels.

I have personal knowledge of the issues in my film, though much of it is fiction.

My goal, in life as a low-turned-high functioning autistic person; is to bridge the gap of communication between the ableist, the disabled and the mentally ill through my features.

I’ve used my life savings and funded the film’s $9,000 production costs by working as a supermarket courtesy clerk for 2 years. As of now, I am seeking an additional $10,000 to help with post-production costs.

PRODUCTION INFO

I have put countless hours and careful thought into what became 70.5 pages of material. To minimize costs, I wrote 15 drafts before filming; starting in March 17th and ending on June 2nd.

The idea was an offshoot of another script I was working on from October last year; even though that script wasn’t working, this one character kept sprouting ideas and I was advised to write about him.

PROGRESS

Filming is complete. This includes 450 shots (camera angles), 16 hour days and 39 actors / 23 people who just did crew work; the process went from 06-17-17 to
09-08-17.

DONOR REWARDS

15 donor reward levels are available on a Pile-up System(rather than an Individual reward).

These include fabulous insights and film credits (see info on sidebar).

Additionally, as soon as Sanctuary Dream makes money, donors will get paid back.

Funds are needed as soon as possible.

Please consider donating. The paid parts for post-production will start with the live musicians in December (sound-syncing due to not having the budget for Time Code is a B****).

Thanks for your interest and have a good day!

Sincerely,

Grant Carsten: The Film Pocket Knife

MORE INFO:

PRODUCTION COSTS:

I’ve paid about $9,000 for production costs (equipment, catering, cast and crew). The $10,000 I’m seeking will finance the post-production phase.

The cast and crew have been paid $10 per page and I'd like to give a big thank you to the individuals who have forgone their payments to lower costs. It’s much appreciated.

Here’s how I set up the bonuses to reward dedicated work:

- $5 for One Scene Actors and Extras
 - $10 for Secondary Actors
 - $20 for Main Actors
 - $100 for the Lead
 - $20 for Crew Members after 5 days of helping the shoot.

There were 34 Filming Days; 13 Professional Days (8 to 16 Hours), 12 Casual Days (< 2 to > 8 hours), and 9 Pickup Days (> 2 Hours). There were break and prepared meal intervals as well.

The highest payment for one person was $800 and the lowest was $10.

The length of footage filmed is 41.66 hours.

POST-PRODUCTION COSTS:

Contributions will pay for the items below (some prices are dependent on funds raised):

1. Video Editing (syncing video with sound and making candidate cuts, as well as locking the picture into a final video cut)

2. Soundtrack (The Music Genre is a culmination of Synth-wave, Soft Rock and Concert Orchestra; with elements of Soul Funk, A cappella, Lead Vocal and a
Harmonica)

3. Sound editing (acquiring sound effects from Libraries and Location Recordings, as well as Foley and planned ADR Sessions; ambience is nothing to sniff at either).

4. Sound Mixing (after the Music, Dialogue and SFX have been placed properly within the cut)

5. Color Correction and Grading (Shot to Shot Matching -> Look -> Correction masks)

6. Paid Positions:

- Live Musicians: $5-$15 Dollars per minute of film (at least 70% of the score will be digital).

- Foley Artists: TBD (artists of Organic Sound like footsteps and clothing ruffles).

- Actor's ADR Sessions: $1 - $10 per minute of film (sound-stage dubbing).

- Sound Mixer: $1,000-$5,000.

- Colorist: TBD

7. Final Cut (Wait 5 weeks after hundreds of hours toiling hard work and watching the film with fresh eyes before deciding what scenes should be deleted or if certain sound effects need some tweaking.)

8. Marketing and Distribution

-MPAA Rating: $ 2500

- Poster Artist: $50 - $300

- Festival Circuit: TBD

- Travel Expenses for Festivals: TBD

- Lawyer for Film Contract of Distributor: TBD

Policy for people getting paid back:

1. With the exception of myself, Producers and donors will be repaid as soon as the film makes money. Reimbursement will be on a paid per dollar system.

2. If the film breaks even, I get my money back.

3. If the film is profitable; I will give all profits as post-distribution percentages to my hardworking cast and crew. This will be based on how many man hours a person has worked, compared to the total man hours. This is for both production and post. It includes those who have forgone their money too.

How I rate aspects of this film: This is for those who wonder in what order do I value the parts of making a movie.

1. Story

2. Sound

3. Actors

4. Editing

5. Production Design

6. Cinematography

7. Visual Effects

Thanks in Advance!
