Snap for the City (SFC)

Don protégé
Overview:
San Francisco is a well documented and oft-photographed city. From the vastness of the Golden Gate Bridge, to the hustle of Chinatown, to the hues of the Mission, photographers comb through San Francisco creating stories of the city through the power of still shots. Much like historians penning textbooks, photographers have used their images to portray a narrative of San Francisco as a city built on grit, rooted in progressive politics, and abundant in culture.

Why?
However, these images only paint a fraction of San Francisco. What narratives are left out of the picture? Which neighborhoods are left to the margins of a 5”x7”? With a landscape that is rapidly shifting in its demographics, communities that have been woven into the fabric of this city are being pushed out. But in a time where photographs exist in 10 second chats or for the purpose of being double-tapped, pictures aren’t given the opportunity to capture the faces and experiences of families that have been here for generations. With the click of a camera shutter, Snap For the City aims to document and preserve the stories of the communities of San Francisco that have played an integral role in the formation of the art, business, culture, and vibrancy of “The City.” Additionally, with more exposure to cameras, students will have the opportunity to learn how photos can be used as a tool of political, social, and emotional expression.

Who?
If a picture is worth a thousand words, who better to be the author than the young adults who live, eat, kick it, and go to school in the city itself? Snap For the City will be a class offered to students at a local high school. The goal of SFC is multilayered. In addition to giving youth the opportunity to capture the world around them through still shots, SFC class aims to help youth use photography as a medium of expression and as means to gain skills that translate to their journey as scholars. The process of taking, filtering through, editing, and creating themes with photos is similar to the process students undertake when they write expository essays or when they use empirical evidence to support a hypothesis.

What/How?
As an elective course at a high school in the Excelsior District of San Francisco, SFC’s curriculum will focus on engaging with and photographing community based organizations, parks, and local businesses in order to create a visual essay of San Francisco. Equipped with DSLRs and an array of lenses, students will learn how to use the various functions of cameras (aperture, shutter speed, bokeh, ISO, focal length, black&white, etc.) as they craft their final product. In addition to photographing, students will explore the purpose and effect of lighting, and how to create custom “filters” by adjusting lighting through digital editing software.

Much like one paragraph does not support a thesis, one photo in isolation does not tell a story. Thus, the course’s final will culminate with a Spring 2016 gallery in which students will select 7-8 prints to have developed and a full feature photobook displayed for family, friends, community members, and donors to view.

When?
The project will take place in the Spring 2016 and classes will be on Wednesdays and weekends. Students will also be provided with point-&-shoot cameras to take home for use beyond the classroom. After the first full course concludes, SFC will be offered as an elective to students for both semesters the following year.

Where?
Many of the students participating in SFC come from San Francisco itself and are some of the best navigators through the city. Thus, classes will involve making visits to neighborhoods, businesses, parks, and sites students consider to be home and community to them. The places each student considered the epicenter of her/his life and experience will be the main focus of the class.

How funds will be used:
6 Canon T5i or Nikon D3200 Cameras
: (6 x $400) = $2400
