Working towards diversity in STEM

The landscape of academic science is currently and historically lacking in diverse representation. This includes people of color, members the LGBTQ community, women, and those who are handicapable. This lack of representation is detrimental to both the field of science, which could benefit from diverse perspectives, and the science or science-adjacent individuals in underrepresented groups find themselves discouraged or alienated because of their identities. Science in Color hopes to provide a platform to celebrate and discuss subjects specifically pertaining to underrepresented groups while also providing a hub for connecting and networking amongst students and professionals in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. The following are action items that Science in Color will be hoping to fund and implement soon:
Improving the quality of the Science in Color podcast by purchasing new quality equipment - DONE
Creation of promotional products and advertising initiatives to help spread the word
Creation of outreach efforts including workshops and forums addressing issues related to belonging to a marginalized group in STEM
Offering travel scholarships to attend one of our events
Sending volunteers from Science in Color to STEM conferences to increase organization visibility and networking possibilities
Providing scholarships to individuals from marginalized groups who are going into STEM
Mentorship Summits for STEM faculty members focusing on how to mentor students from diverse backgrounds
