Dad's Medical Fund

$84,200 of $150,000 goal

Raised by 915 people in 21 months
Father's Day is coming up. This is the first year that it's meant more than just another day to call my dad to jokingly wish him the same thing I do on the daily... tell him how much I love him and what he means to me. I've never needed a dedicated day to tell my homie/father/friend what he means to me.. Now, my dad, Samson Desta, is in the ICU here in Ethiopia fighting for his life. It's been 2 weeks so far and the doctors are expecting another month to month and half of intensive care. Now imagine the recovery phase.

With this said... I'd like to respect his privacy and will say only this: a small infection has now led to a life-threatening disease with complications. I am forever grateful to the team who has stabailized him here in Ethiopia, but he will need to be medically evacuated to either Kenya or South Africa for futher treatment. He's had 4 operations in the last week so far and they expect a few more ops among other treatments due to his complications. We are also waiting until he is stable enough to handle the altitude. In the meantime, as you can imagine, it isn't easy - emotionally and financially. Asking for help is hard. But here I am asking you and yours to help me save my daddy. Anyone who knows me and my relationship with pops knows what he means to me and that I'd do anything for him - even if it makes me uncomfortable like asking for help from anyone!

I value integrity and transparency and I know times ain't easy. If you'd like to know exactly where your money goes, please feel free to reach out and I'll send you info. The condition he's in is sensitive to time and he's fighting this every single day, every minute makes a difference. We are trying to raise this money within 2 weeks.. Please share this with any and everyone. And please continue to send prayers and positive vibrations. Any and all help and love is more than welcome during this difficult time. I thank you, my family thanks you and I know my daddy will forever be grateful. He'd kill me if he knew I was doing this, but that's because he doesn't like to burden anyone, especially his baby girl. Thanks world.

To those who've reached out already, thank you thank you thank you for your support. It means the world!

Peace and love, always.

Selam, selam! If you’re in the Washington, D.C. area (or have family here), check out the Ethio/American movie ‘Lambadina’ tomorrow, Thursday, 10/12 and Friday, 10/13!! All proceeds will be donated to papa’s fund. Although he’s doing better overall, healing is going to take much longer than we thought. Thank you for the continued prayers and support Check out LambadinaMovie.com for the trailer and more info on the film. ☺️ (I might be in it )

Daddy's home y'all! doing SO much better. Can I ask a favor? I know his friends are excited and happy for their friend, but can I ask for a week or so before the calls start coming in? Dad is loved by many and for that, I'm humbled. But we just need some time for him to adjust to the time and start his journey in the States. Once we all settle, I'll send another update. For those who want to see him, I'm SO sorry, but I'm forcing him to put himself first right now. He's just as eager to see everyone and talk to his friends. But he neeeeeeds to rest. I hope you understand where I'm coming from. And I thank you for showing him, me and my family love.

As for me, I'm ecstatic. No words. Just happy af! Thanks for keeping us in your prayers ❤️

Bless,
Bersu

Sooooo... I have yet to give a proper update in large part due to the MANY ups and downs. Each day makes a huge difference and within a single day he would range from almost perfect, to not so good. Any update I'd give would've been misleading at any given moment. But now....I think we're in the safe zone. He's doing SO well right now and has started to walk, a little more everyday. He's finally approaching the final stretch. We're planning to bring him home to DC soon, but are still waiting for him to gain some strength. I don't think y'all realize that I almost lost my dad. I say that with such gratitude because if it weren't for everyone's financial support and PRAYERS, we would've been planning a funeral and not our travel home, all together.

To MY friends.... I can't even think of y'all without tears in my eyes anymore. From the fundraisers, the texts checking up on me and the way y'all CAME THRU as one.... I'm speechless. I've always known one of my biggest blessings are the people in my life, but y'all blew me away. My family (as most) didn't have faith in our generation, especially because they think we're Americanized and assume we don't value family the way theirs does the previous generation, however, Y'ALL PROVED THEM WRONG and they've been praying for y'all and singing your praisesssss since. They realized they've misjudged us and have been humbled ("sit down" lol).

To my dad's friends....thank you for contributing, spreading the word and keeping him in your prayers from all over the world. I know my dad knows a lot of people, but DAMN!!!! From his childhood friends to his newer friends... y'all have helped keep his spirit up. He's humbled that so many have reached out and care about him. His faith in God has not wavered...

To those who've been talking shit.... surprisingly it's not my generation (haha, take THAT!)... Bless you too. I'll keep it short for y'all. Just please, out of respect, do not try to smile and check on me. I have eyes and ears in many places :) You will not be met with grace. Talking about me is one thing. But my family.... bye. May you find the peace you are lacking in your heart. That's the only thing that could make you talk shit about a father who almost lost his life. Go home and please learn to love yourself.

But back to loving on the people who've been supportive... Thank you. I sound like a broken record, but until I figure out how and what to do to pay it forward, I am going to keep saying it.. THANK YOU. You may have noticed the goal amount has changed... Due to a number of things, we are able to half the amount. I had no idea what healthcare is like on this side of the world so I highballed it. If this happened in America, we probably would've raised it. Everything happens for a reason, though. Healthcare in Africa is terrifying.. and so sad. But we are SO grateful to the team at Korean Hospital in Addis and Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi for all they've done. I could write an entire book about this experience. I won't start here lol.

To those who've donated thru Venmo, Square Cash and directly to my bank account, I appreciate you! 100% of that goes to the fund while gofundme has to get paid a percentage. They gotta make money too.

Next steps... hoping to get out of Nairobi in the coming weeks. Which means, it's almost time for dad to get stronger on his own thru physical therapy and a few other treatments. He's going to have to get adjusted to his new life. 2nd chance at life.. He'll tell you his story when he's ready, I'm sure. In the meantime, I ask that you wish him well and continue to pray and spread the word. I know many of you are very close to him, but he'll open up about this on his own time. He's too nice to tell you what he really feels, so let's not make him uncomfortable with too many questions when you do get a chance to speak to him (down the line, not now). I, on the other hand, am the overprotective, sometimes outta line daughter who will ask that his space be respected. This hasn't been easy for any of us... but time heals all.

Always feel free to reach out to me. Love and light!!!
