Yulin Dog Meat Festival Rescue

Donation protected
Hi everybody!

So by now you may have heard about the 1300 dogs in Guangzhou that were rescued from a truck bound for the annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival in southern China. The dogs were seized by police after the driver failed to provide correct documentation for transporting these animals. Activists and rescue organisations were then able to negotiate with officials for the protection of these puppies. Police provided an outdoor site where dogs were divided between various animal organisations who took responsibility for the animals in their care.

Unfortunately, dogs couldn't be removed from the site as they were still legally under police control so hundreds of volunteers, including vets and medical professionals, headed to Guangzhou to help these sick and injured pups. Sadly, many died after being unable to get sufficient treatment. Death toll is uncertain right now but estimated at around 400.

Locals complained and the safety of the dogs and volunteers was put at risk. Within a few days, a new site was set up but unfortunately turned out to be even more dangerous with locals attacking dogs and volunteers. So on the night of June 24, volunteers and organisations rushed to evacuate their dogs and 121 were sent to a clinic in Shenzhen, a clinic where many of us volunteers bring our own pets.

One dog sadly passed away on the first night after being treated for Parvo virus. 28 were confirmed to have been sent by two different rescue organisations on site who claimed responsibility for their medical bills. These dogs have since left Shenzhen to be taken care of in their rescuers' cities. This leaves us with 92 dogs at the clinic and no idea which organisation they came from on site. This is a massive rescue mission and, as you can see, can be chaotic at times. Dr Pan at the clinic decided to treat these 92 dogs using his own funds. He is extremely dedicated and will do everything he can to save them. I honestly would not trust anyone else with this challenge more than I trust him.

Our GoFundMe page is for these 92 dogs and Dr Pan's costs. Some dogs are still being cared for around Guangzhou and you may see other organisations fundraising for 6/19 dogs. The reality is: 1300 is too many for one organisation and the easiest thing to do was divide responsibility.

We are not even an organisation. We were a small group of volunteers in Guangzhou who found each other in this mess. We all live in Shenzhen so decided to set up a volunteer team to make this whole thing as easy as possible for our clinic. Our guys do the messy work while the vets save lives.

Full treatment for a healthy dog costs around 700RMB ($100). Sick dogs with CDV or CPV can cost in excess of 7000RMB ($1000) We have 92 dogs, 20 of which are confirmed cases of CDV and CPV (distemper and Parvo virus). After living in such close quarters, this number is bound to increase and our costs will increase dramatically. Dr Pan is working day and night, staying until the early hours of the morning. He has never once questioned the costs, he only wants to save their lives.

Our target is big. Medicine is expensive. Distemper is an airborne virus that spreads easily so many more are likely to test positive in the coming days.

Please give what you can. Thank you for your amazing support so far. In all of this awfulness, there has been an overwhelming amount of kindness and love.
