Save Dante's Eye

Dante is a 15 year old spotted draft that came to join the Falconwood Vaulters program in August 2018. He moved to Georgia with his owner who plans to start college in the fall. Dante has had a long career carrying kids from age two to eighteen in both the competition vaulting arena and in therapeutic programs. He is a super star in every way. Since being at Falconwood he has become the team horse, carries our tiny tots, and has been helping with our therapy program.
Tuesday afternoon Dante came in from the field with an injury to his eye. We immediately called our amazing vets at Piedmont Equine Associates and unfortunately got some super scary news. Dante had a small scrape that led to a very aggressive fungal infection, which developed in less than twenty-four hours. We learned the fungal infection had already eaten away the top three layers of his eye and he needed to be sent to the University of Georgia Large Animal Hospital right away for treatment. We got him to UGA and his diagnosis was confirmed.
Dante needs some very expensive procedures and medications to try to save his eye. To keep him hospitalized at UGA for two days with the treatments needed, his bill is estimated to be $2500.00. His owner is doing everything that she can to save his eye, but cannot afford any more than two days of hospitalized treatment. After his first overnight stay, his doctors are saying that things are looking positive, but he will have a long road (possibly months) of expensive eye medications to keep his eye. Please help us save Dante’s eye and his career as a vaulting and therapy horse for so many children.
Falconwood Vaulters is a non-profit organization that works with youth of all ages and backgrounds to increase physical fitness, build strength through team work, and develop higher self esteem. These qualities are developed through equestrian vaulting which combines dance and gymnastics on the back of a moving horse.
