Sarah Ashley's Medical Expenses

Donation protected

This is my beautiful daughter, Sarah Ashley, 22 years old.  On Wednesday, December 14, 2016, she suffered a massive stroke that left her with paralysis on the entire left side of her body. We learned that she has a very rare disease, Moyamoya--an unusual and unproductive way the brain compensates for stroke. With all the tests that have been run so far, we still don’t know the initial cause of her stroke. It has been heartbreaking for me as her mother, and for all who know and love her, to see her ashamed of her smile, struggle physically to achieve basic tasks, hurt emotionally for loss of her former life, worry about the financial strife ahead. Life as she/we knew it has been changed indeed. Our goal is to give her the best "new normal" possible!

She is currently hospitalized at INOVA Mount Vernon Rehabilitation Center, Alexandria, Virginia with the best of the best who have her best interest at heart! We are so grateful for this! Prior to coming to Mt. Vernon, she spent a few days in critical care at INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital, Fairfax, Virginia. The recommendation is that she spend 3-4 more weeks in rehabilitation. When discharged, she will be moving in with me where she will require more therapy and home nursing care. Inevitably, she will need neurosurgery to prevent additional strokes. At this time, the plan is to get her as far along in her recovery as possible before this step. She is making great progress!

Sarah needs any help she can get right away. Her long-term hospitalization is extremely costly. This does not include the critical care she previously received, the extensive tests, the specialists, equipment needed, surgery, nor anything else necessary going forward. She is unable to work at this time, hence no income to maintain/handle the transition from her current home, not to mention her future care. In order to accommodate her needs and keep her safe, my home will also require modifications and various equipment.

After insurance coverage, there will be a great deal of debt. We are asking for your support for the next year in order to alleviate the financial pain that comes with the physical and emotional pain--to have one less thing to worry about and keep our focus on her healing. Any help you can give will make a big difference!

If you can't donate funds, volunteers are welcome to run errands after she comes home while necessary, or to provide healthy meals to fill in when cooking is not possible due to time.
