From Sara's sister Julia:

I’ve always joked with my sister and called her Superwoman, but the truth is I really believe it. I’ve always admired her ability to do it all and with such grace and generosity. Most of you who know her probably share this sentiment. Right now she needs our help, love and support to continue being Superwoman for Scarlett, her family, her students and ALL of her friends (which is most everyone on this planet).

Most of you know that Sara was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue (tongue cancer) in early June. From there she was referred to MD Anderson in Houston and on July 13th she endured a 10-hour surgery in which doctors removed the middle to back right of her tongue and cancerous lymph nodes. To replace the missing part of her tongue, her plastic surgeon removed skin from her left arm to replace the tumor and 6” of artery in her arm to hook up blood supply to her new “tongue.”

I will spare you the gory details of her long hospital stay, but like a true Superwoman she stayed very positive, kicked recovery in the butt, and was released in late July.

Still fighting the cancer, she now has the daunting task of 6 weeks of radiation in Houston 5 days a week—away from Scarlett—all while grading papers for the UT fall semester. We are told that the kind of radiation she is being given is one of the worst in terms of side effects and how it affects the throat, speech, and swallowing.

Even after radiation ends, her recovery cannot fully begin until 21 days after enduring lingering side effects. She can possibly begin to feel normal again around 2-5 months after radiation.

During this time she is trying to maintain a normal life for Scarlett while staying strong and positive. She and Scarlett have received an outpouring of love and support and will be forever grateful for all the positive vibes, prayers, flowers, meals, encouraging messages, hugs, and love they have received.

These contributions will go toward outstanding medical expenses at MD Anderson, travel to and from Houston, dental work to get her teeth back on track after surgery and radiation, and toward the treatment that includes a strict ketogenic diet, acupuncture, chiropractic care, and overhauling environmental factors in her house.

Sara has now entered a peaceful state since her diagnosis and truly comprehends that life is a wonderful, amazing gift. Thank you for listening, caring, and for supporting Sara and our family throughout this incredible and astonishing journey.
