We are Iyad Afalqa and Samila Amanyraoufpoor, husband and wife, from Irvine, California. We are Confirmed Bernie Sanders District Pledged Delegates from California Congressional District 45. We are seeking your help to raise the funds that will ensure that we attend the DNC Convention and fight for Sanders' nomination and platform.
Here is our story:
On May 1st, 2016, Samila Amanyraoufpoor and Iyad Afalqa broke barriers in the 2016 Elections when they were elected as Bernie Sanders’ Delegates from California Congressional District 45. Iyad and Samila empowered and inspired their local mainstream, Muslim American, Arab American and Middle Eastern American communities to get involved in the 2016 U.S. elections. They created a slate of 7 progressives to campaign, called the “Tim Carpenter Slate,” referring to the founder of the Progressive Democrats of America. With the help of social media and on-the-ground campaigning, the husband and wife duo Samila and Iyad appealed to voters and won a majority of the votes.
Post California Primary Elections results, both Samila and Iyad became Confirmed Sanders Pledged District Delegates and MUST attend the DNC Convention in Philadelphia July 25th-July 28th.

In an effort to circumvent democracy, DNC failed them and many elected pledged delegates by NOT negotiating the Hotel prices to be reasonable and affordable. Further, Delegates are required by the Campaigns to stay at the Official California Delegation’s designated hotel. The campaign is continuing to stress its preference for delegates to stay at the official hotel as they plan to hold all strategy meetings in person there and want easy access to DELEGATES at a moment's notice. Philadelphia taxi drivers have gone on strike a few times previously and have threatened to go on strike during the DNC Convention. In addition there may be many protestors and rally-goers in the streets, clogging traffic.
Delegates are responsible for their own expenses including airfare, lodging, food, and transportation in Philadelphia for Five days, all of which is estimated to cost around $4,500 per delegate. Hotel rooms are $700 + Tax /night and the hotel payment is due in FULL by July 17th.
Iyad helped Senator Sanders win dozen of key states where Arab Americans and Muslim Americans communities have notable presence. Further, Iyad served as an Advisory Board Member to Bernie Sanders’ California Campaign; also, he was selected to the Sanders’ Southern California People-Powered Leadership Steering Committee.
Iyad and Samila worked hard to get out the vote for Bernie in California. Samila as a Professor at California State University had reached out to VP of External Affairs to facilitate Bernie Booths at the CSUDH campus to educate and encourage students to vote during the California Primary. Both husband and wife have phone-banked, walked and knocked on doors in Orange County area to remind and encourage voters to vote for Bernie Sanders. As members of the American Muslims for Bernie , Arab Americans for Bernie and Iranian Americans for Bernie, they set up Bernie booths for numerous times at mosques to educate and encourage the Muslim community to vote for Bernie. They even took things further when in the last week before primary; they held town hall meetings for senior citizen voters at assisted living facilities in South Orange County.
Iyad played an instrumental role in organizing the Arab American and Muslim American by launching three civic engagement campaigns, #RockTheMuslimVote , #YallaVote and #BeshkanVote. As members of California Democratic Party central Committee, they both know the ins and outs of the party and have the experience to influence the decision of Party Officials.
During the last Executive Board of California Democratic Party meeting in Long Beach, Iyad ran against the incumbents’ slate for DNC to become a Super Delegate. He came close to win when he earned the 13th spot among 34 men candidates who were competing on 10 seats. This was despite the fact he only had his campaign for 27 hours and spent only $28.83, where the incumbents’ slate campaigned for as long as a year and half and spent thousands of dollars.
As lifelong Progressive Democrats and grassroots community organizers, from the people to the people, we are reaching out to our fellow Bernie Supporters and fellow citizens who are striving for the change of status quo of our country policies on local and global level. This political revolution cannot be accomplished from the sidelines. The changes Bernie is calling for will benefit ALL of us. Not just some of us.

It costs about $4,500 per delegate to attend. Which add up to $9,000 for two delegates. But because we are a husband and wife confirmed Delegates, and we are SHARING the ROOM, we have a cost saving of $1,900. Our Estimated Expenses for attending is about $7,100. Individual delegates may not accept any contributions from sources prohibited from making contributions in connection with federal elections. 11 CFR 110.14(c)(2). These sources include:
- Corporations (including banks and nonprofit corporations);
- Labor organizations;
- Foreign nationals or businesses (except "green card" holders--those admitted to the United States for permanent residence); and
- Federal government contractors (such as partnerships and sole proprietors with federal contracts). 11 CFR 110.20; 114.2; 115.2, 115.4 and 115.5.
By donating funds to this campaign, you are stating that you have the legal ability to do so, based on the above statement.
