Dear family, friends and beloved community! We are trying to raise $8000 to help us purchase and renovate the Salty Bob, a long-term collective house in Santa Cruz that will also become home for the Temple of the Waters.
The money will go to lawyer’s fees and closing costs (about $5000) and new hardwood floors to replace the very old, allergen-intense carpets (about $3000).
About the house(s):
The purchase of the Salty Bob includes the house in the back, which was heretofore rented separately from us. This means that the amount of community housing we’ll be able to provide will double. It’s kind of incredible, and the end of a really long, sweet journey with the landlord of the house who for years (since 2003) voluntarily kept the rent below market-rate. He’s the one who decided to let us put together an offer, and he’s the one who waited for us to get our act together, and now our act is all together and we just need your help getting across the finish line!
Why does it matter to you if we get across the finish line? This has been a community house for years. We’ve hosted meetings and gatherings. We’ve welcomed, sheltered and fed travelers including touring cyclists and bands. We’ve shared our space (including our own rooms) with friends and families in times of need. The stability of housing has allowed the people who’ve lived here to do volunteer community work including facilitation and conflict support for social justice and eco-defense movements, immigrant solidarity organizing, hosting queer spaces, and grassroots art & music events.
Having secure housing has helped make all of that sustainable, and we’d love to continue contributing to a vibrant community – with your support!
The kiddos:
Your support will give Solas a steady place to grow up in, Avery a solid home base for middle school and high school, and allow Autumn to complete high school in the same house she moved to in kindergarten (which is a miracle in the housing market that is Santa Cruz, links below).

We’re closing in June, so the sooner we see what our communities can contribute, the better. Things are moving fairly quickly.
